[INTRO]

Welcome to Hard, Heavy & Hair, the place where “Metal Never Dies”. This is brand new UDO!

U.D.O. – Metal Never Dies
—————————————-

“Metal Never Dies”. Ain’t that the truth!

My name is Pariah Burke, and I’m your hard talking, heavy drinking, hairball of a horny hedonist host.

Thank you for joining me on this week’s show. It’s a good one, too. Coming up I’ve got for you brand new Iron Maiden–yes NEW Iron Maiden!–plus new Heavy & Earth, Big City, Pain, Robin Red, and more!

The debut solo work of Marta Gabriel from Crystal Viper, a Then & Now comparison with the band Europe, news about Steel Panther, and plenty more to keep any Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, or Hair Band fan entertained for the next two hours. So what do you say? Why don’t we get back to the “Monkey Business” of music? This Dirty 30 song is from Skid Row.

—————————————-
Skid Row – Monkey Business
Babylon A.D. – Bad Blood
—————————————-

Babylon A.D. and “Bad Blood” from their 1992 sophomore album Nothing Sacred.

It’s time to “Lick It Up” with Kiss.

—————————————-
KISS – Lick It Up
—————————————-

We have to break for a word from our sponsors, which gives you just a couple of minutes to go on down and lick it up.

[Rock Queens]

This week’s Rock Queen is Marta Gabriel, front woman for Crystal Viper and long-time session musician, doing her very first solo album. Her album, titled Metal Queens and available from Listenable Records, is a covers album that Marta herself says is, quote, “a celebration and tribute to some of [her] favorite female vocalists, and a solid piece of heavy metal that fans might enjoy even if they don’t know original versions of those songs.” End quote. Well, I’m betting YOU know all the original versions of the songs on Metal Queen, just like you’ll know where this next song comes from. Marta Gabriel is this week’s Hard, Heavy & Hair Rock Queen, and she’s covering one of Rock’s all-time greatest queens, Lee Aaron, in the title track from her solo covers album. This is “Metal Queen” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

Ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue? Remember: the first clue is always the hardest.

The Cover Song of the Week original was released by a 1969 supergroup that performed only during a 3-month summer tour in the Summer of Love and released only one album, a self-titled LP that topped both the US and UK charts at the same time the group was breaking up. That album’s cover phone became nearly as famous as the British supergroup itself. The album cover featured a photo of a nude 11-year-old girl, Mariora Goschen, holding a model spaceship. It was meant by the photographer to symbolize technology borne by innocence. In 1969 it cause a stir. A few years later, it became infamous.

What self-titled album was that? If you know, then you know the original recording artist’s name. The Cover Song of the Week itself is one of two hits that album, and band, produced.

More, and easier, clues later.

This is Chevelle, “The Red.”

Van Halen, Tuff, new Iron Maiden, and more is still coming up.

I need a new bottle of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. While I grab that, please listen to these brief announcements from the folks whose money keeps me liquored up and on the air.

I hope you’re not sittin’ home tonight. You’ve got summer nights and your radio, and that’s all ya need, baby, dontcha know? Ah. Hot summer nights, that’s my time of year. Crank it up. This is Van Halen.

—————————————-
Van Halen – Summer Nights
Tuff – Ruck a Pit Bridge
—————————————-

That was Tuff with “Ruck a Pit Bridge.” Can you believe that album is 30 years old? Stevie Rachelle just posted on Facebook a photo of the first batch of 30th Anniversary remasters of that album.

Coming up in just a few minutes a brand new feature we like to call “Then & Now.” For now, it’s time for a party in your head with the newest single from Swedish musical project Pain. This is “Party in my Head” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

—————————————-
Pain – Party In My Head
Extreme – Teacher’s Pet
Enuff Z’Nuff – Hot Little Summer Girl
—————————————-

Normally at this time in the show we do the Triple-Shot, but I thought we’d change it up just a bit and, for this week, replace Triple-Shot with a different feature, Then & Now.

[Then & Now]

Then & Now presents two songs back-to-back, one of an artist’s early hits and one of its newest. This time, we’re listening to the band Europe, who formed in 1979, became a Swedish sensation when they won the American Idol-style TV competition Rock-SM–they actually became bigger than the show itself–and then rose to international stardom with their 1986 third album The Final Countdown. For the “Then” part of Then & Now, we’ll hear the band’s highest-charting single ever, followed by their most recent single, the title track to 2017’s Walk the Earth LP. I chose that for the “Now” song not just because it’s their most recent single, but also because the song, recorded at London’s famous Abbey Road Studios, has a little something extra sonically. The song also really speaks to me personally, as I hope it will to you, too.

Then & Now, this is Europe from 1986 and 2017. First up is “Carrie.”

—————————————-
Europe – Carrie
Europe – Walk the Earth
—————————————-

“Walk the Earth,” the Now part of a Then & Now segment with the band Europe.

Who would you like to see featured on an upcoming Then & Now? Hit me with your ideas by calling the Hard, Heavy & Hair studio line at (503) 395-7257 (add a +1 before that if you’re outside North America). If using your phone to make phone calls isn’t your thing, use it to communicate your ideas with me via text to the same number, or on social media where everywhere you could possibly want to reach the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show, we’re At-Pariah-Rocks.

Another cover song of the week clue is after new Divided Truth. This is “For Years.”

—————————————-
Divided Truth – For Years
—————————————-

For your second Cover Song of the Week clue, let’s talk about the artist doing the Hard Rock cover, a single they released in 1990.

This band was formed by Gregg Guiffria and the record featuring the Cover Song of the Week would have been Guiffria’s third album, if Gene Simmons hadn’t insisted that they change the band name and find a new lead singer.

What band was that? Think about it. We’ll be right back with lots more Rock from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 20-teens, and today on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

Normally I write down who requests a song, but I was conversing on Facebook with the drummer for this next band and a whole bunch, a gaggle, a googolplex, even, of other people, and I asked somebody, at some point, ‘what is your favorite Apocalyptic Lovers song.’ I remember his answer, but not his name, because that’s how I roll–the music always comes first. So, for that dude–Robert something I think–this is your favorite Apocalyptic Lovers track, “Killing for a Living.”

—————————————-
Apocalyptic Lovers – Killing for a Living
Shaman’s Harvest – Dragonfly
Tora Tora – Riverside Drive
—————————————-

All new Iron Maiden, plus a tribute to the Cinderella men we lost this week, is next after the briefest of FCC-mandated station identifications.

This next song and its music video dropped TODAY. The music video is so good, you could easily splice it into the movie Heavy Metal, and it would fit perfectly. Hell! The 6-minute music video for this song is better than the entire hour-and-a-half of Heavy Metal 2000! I am quite serious. Hit the show notes for this, Hard, Heavy & Hair 314, on PariahRocks.com, to check out the killer music video. Until then, just enjoy the music of new Iron Maiden. This is “The Writing on the Wall” debuting on Hard, Heavy & Hair… NOW!

—————————————-

—————————————-

Sadly, we recently pulled the Rock N’ Roll train into Heartbreak Station. On July 14th. Cinderella guitarist Jeff LaBar passed away at the age of 58 in Nashville. The next day, another Cinderella footman died–keyboardist Gary Corbett. This week was a sad week. This is Cinderella, “Heartbreak Station.”

—————————————-
Cinderella – Heartbreak Station
—————————————-

This next band just announced that long-time bassist Lexxi Foxx has left the band, ostensibly to do make-up on dogs. Let’s wish Lexxi the best in his new canine couture endeavors–or whatever the real story is. This is Steel Panther from way, way back, featuring Lexxi Foxx on bass, on the song “17 Girls in a Row.”

For your third and final Cover Song of the Week clue, I have just two lines for you:

Well, I’m near the end and I just ain’t got the time
And I’m wasted and I can’t find my way home

Think you know the song? Find out if you’re right in just a moment. The Cover Song of the Week is next.

[COW]

Have you figured out the Cover Song of the Week, the original recording artist, and the covering artist?

The song was written by Steve Winwood for a one-and-done supergroup he formed in 1969 with Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech. The band’s name actually came from the title of the highly controversial album cover photograph–Blind Faith. I described the cover photo earlier, so I think once is enough. If you missed it in the first Cover Song of the Week clue, you can always stream this show on demand from PariahRocks.com.

The artist providing the Hard Rock cover version of Blind Faith’s biggest hit, was, effectively, the band Guiffria, named for founding member Gregg Giuffria after he left Angel. In 1987, Giuffria signed with Gene Simmon’s label Simmons Records, but with two conditions: First, the band had to change its name, and, second, they had to find a new lead singer. The result was James Christian fronting the band now called House of Lords. Their 1988 self-titled album did well, but it’s from their 1990 sophomore record Sahara that the Cover Song of the Week comes.

This is the Hard, Heavy & Hair Cover Song of the Week, “Can’t Find My Way Home” by House of Lords followed immediately by the 1969 original by supergroup Blind Faith for comparison.

—————————————-
House of Lords – Can’t Find My Way Home

—————————————-

I’m waisted, and I can’t find my way back to the mic. That was “Can’t Find My Way Home” from the one-and-done supergroup Blind Faith featuring Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker, and Eric Clapton, along with Ric Grech. That was the original version following the Hard, Heavy & Hair Cover Song of the Week, a harder version of the same song released in 1990 by House of Lords.

Let’s slip back to just a couple of years before that with Whitesnake’s 1987 version of “Here I Go Again” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

My name is Pariah Burke, I’m your hard talking, heavy drinking, hairball of a horny host and producer. Thank you for joining me for this week’s show.

We’re going to end the show with another new song. This is Robin Red with “Don’t Leave Me.” Something I, to my great, great sadness, I must now do. I’ll see you back here next week on this station for another all new Hard, Heavy & Hair Show. Thank you for tuning in. I’m Pariah Burke hoping your week rrrrocks!
