Dio with “Rainbow in the Dark.” Opening the show with that song isn’t just a random choice. It’s significant because it ties into the rest of the show in two ways:
First, it has something to do with the Cover Song of the Week mystery, a new Hard Rock cover song you’re going to love.
And, second, coming up on the show, I’ll be joined on the air by one of the men who wrote and performed on that song, the co-founder of the band Dio, Heavy Metal drummer Vinny Appice. Vinny’s going to talk to us about his newest albums, some funny stories from the road, and even reveal the true reason he left Kill Devil Hill.

Ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue? Remember: the first clue is always the hardest.
Both the Cover Song of the Week and its original version are new songs. The cover was released just days ago, while the original isn’t even a year old yet. Therefore, the first and hardest clue is about the song itself, while later clues in the show will focus on the artists, which are easier to figure out.
The 2020 song is an uptempo, Pop Rock song with Synth-Pop and Disco elements that, overall, is reminiscent of Prince’s songs. It’s a song about a woman take back control of her life after heartbreak and life missteps. The singer, who, in the vocals, clearly channels the spirits of Deborah Harry and–especially–Stevie Nicks, says the song is, quote, a “reflection of everyone kind of having this personal kind of woke moment”.

“Here’s to Us”, my friend, from Halestorm.
Vinny Appice is one of the biggest Metal drummers and songwriters in the world, and is in the Hall of Heavy Metal History for his contributions to Heavy Metal drumming.
As a teenager he played on a John Lennon album, and drummed for Lennon during the former Beatle’s final live performance. Vinny replaced Bill Ward as Black Sabbath’s drummer during the Dio years, and then joined Ronnie James Dio in founding and defining the sound of the band Dio. Vinny co-wrote all your favorite Dio songs, which he still performs, along with new songs, with a mostly reunited Dio under the name Last in Line. Vinny is also part of Joel Hoekstra’s 13 and the supergroup Resurrection Kings.

For your third and final Cover Song of the Week clue, let’s talk about the original recording artist. She’s a solo artist who, quite frankly, I thought would never have her music on Hard, Heavy & Hair for any reason. It’s not that I don’t like her–quite the opposite, actually. But her music is straight Top 40 Pop, and not something I ever thought a Hard Rock band would cover. Clearly, I was wrong.
So, who is this original artist?
She’s someone EVERYONE has heard of, a child actor turned singer, she’s the daughter of the “Achy Breaky Heart” guy, the god-daughter of Dolly Parton, and originally made famous as… Hannah Montana.
If you know who I’m talking about, she’s the original recording artist whose song gets a killer new Hard Rock cover in the Cover Song of the Week, next!
[COW]I’m going to admit something controversial. Are you ready? I like Miley Cyrus. I don’t know her personally. I’ve never met her. I like her music. I like her as an artist. I know you’re probably tempted to change the channel right now and write me off as somebody you’ll never listen to again. And I did that to Miley Cyrus. I wrote her off. I thought she was just the next vacuous pop princess. And then Wrecking Ball came across my desk and then other songs by Miley came across my desk and you know what? She’s a really good musician. My friend Greg Fox played keyboards for her. If you really look at Miley Cyrus as an artist, if you really listen to Miley Cyrus’s music, she’s a good musician. Her music might not be your style. But she is a good musician. And this next song and the Cover Song of the Week is just one more example of her talent. It’s so good, the band Inglorious covered it in the very first single from their new all-covers album slated for release in September.
This is Inglorious’s new cover of “Midnight Sky,” followed, in a Hell-freezes-over kind of moment, by the Miley Cyrus original for comparison.
