“Man in the Moon” from the Scream, fronted way back in 1991 there, by John Corabi, who would go on to membership in Motley Crue, Brides of Destruction, the Dead Daisies, and others.
Ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue? Remember: the first clue is always the hardest.
The original song was inspired by the teachings of American psychology Arthur Janov and his Primal Therapy treatment, which was about helping people confront their fears by screaming and shouting. The songwriters and original recording artists, were followers of Janov’s school of Primal Therapy, as was John Lennon. Lennon was inspired by Primal Therapy to write several songs, but the band I’m talking about, the band who wrote the Cover Song of the Week original, went much deeper and further. Not only was the song written about primal therapy, but the band also took their name from Janov’s work.
What band was that? Here’s another clue: They were huge on Top 40 Radio in the 80s.

In between talking about what he’s doing on the upcoming second Black Swan record, his first solo album since 1999’s Business as Usual, and other topics, Robin told me the sweet story behind his newest single, “Last December,” the first song he’s ever written for his wife of 28 years.

The Hard, Heavy & Hair Triple-Shot, three songs related by a common thread. What is that thread? You have a few more seconds to guess while I tell you who and what you just heard.
In order, you heard XYZ with “Come On N’ Love Me” followed by Black Sabbath’s “Electric Funeral” to form the dark center of the sandwich, and finally Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” topping it off. What do all three songs have in common? They all feature a wah effect from a wah-wah pedal.
I’ve got another new song for you right another Cover Song of the Week clue.
For your second clue, let’s talk about the Heavy Metal band doing the cover.
On June 3rd, Billboard ranked this band number 5 on the list of Greatest of All Time Mainstream Rock Artists. On the list they sit between Van Halen at number 4 and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at number 6. And what’s really interesting is that this Metal band has only been around since 2000, when they released their debut album containing the Cover Song of the Week, which has since gone platinum five times.
Here’s a bonus hint: Another song from that debut album, from the band doing the Cover Song of the Week, contributed a distinctive part to the opener of this very show. If you’re a longtime listener to Hard, Heavy & Hair, you’ve undoubtedly heard this many times:

Know those lyrics? Can you place them in a song? Can you remember what 80s Pop duo wrote and originally recorded the song, AND, can you remember what huge Heavy Metal act most famously covered the song? If you have all those answers, then you’ve solved the Cover Song of the Week mystery for this week.

Primal therapy is a trauma-based pyschotherapy technique that leads a patient through re-experiencing childhood trauma and venting that pain through screaming and shouting. It apparently helped John Lennon, who underwent it in the early-1970s. Pianist Roger Williams and actor James Earl Jones were also big fans. As were Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, the duo that would name their band Tears for Fears because of Primal Therapy, which also inspired the lyrics to one of their most popular songs.
Shout, shout, let it all out is 100% primal therapy, as is the rest of the song “Shout” from 1985’s Songs from the Big Chair LP. That album title, by the way, was inspired by the movie Sybil starring Sally Field in which the titular character finds comfort in a psychiatrist’s chair while being treated for her multiple personality disorder, one of the 16 of which was a frightened little girl.
With a genesis like that for the song “Shout,” is it any wonder that a band named Disturbed would choose to cover the song on their debut album titled Sickness?
Although they dubbed it “Shout 2000,” here is Disturbed with their cover of Tears for Fears’ “Shout,” followed immediately by the original for comparison.

That was “Shout,” the original by Tears for Fears, following the Hard, Heavy & Hair Cover Song of the Week by Disturbed.
In case you didn’t pick up on it, there were many hints to the Cover Song of the Week throughout the preceding hour and a half of the show. It wasn’t just the three overt clues I gave. Everything from the opening the song by Dio to the themes, titles, and even band names of many other songs throughout the show should have guided you toward solving the Cover Song of the Week mystery.
