Remember: the first clue is always the hardest.
The Cover Song of the Week original was written and performed by a Rock guitarist and songwriter the Rock world still mourns, someone we lost when he was only 25 years-old. He passed away more than 30 years ago in Florida, but had he stayed with us longer, most agree, this talented guitarist and songwriter would have been a major force in Rock and Hard Rock.
If you can’t think of his name, maybe a little sample of his playing will help. This is an 11-second track that was part of a larger whole. It’s called “Naked, Part Four.”
[Naked, Pt Four]Who played that? Who was that Rock guitarist we lost at the age of 25 in Florida? He wrote and originally performed the Cover Song of the Week.

I remember a morning in 1989 or ’90. I went to sleep listening to a Classic Rock radio station–hearing the Doors, the Who, Pilot, and so on–and overnight the station had changed formats to a modern Rock station. I remember I’m waking up, lying in bed in my waterbed, and I hear the last fading notes of Bon Jovi’s “I’ll Be There For You.” And then I hear this, not weird, but out of place Eastern dulcimer, half a minute of sitar, then a killer, heavy guitar riff, and then some guy saying acapella, “now dig this.” That moment, right there, hooked me, and made me an Electric Boys fan all the way up until now. That very day I went out and bought Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride–on cassette, which I wore out twice before eventually buying the CD. I’ve bought every Electric Boys record since.
It was this song right here, “All Lips n’ Hips”.

That song started me as a life-long fan of the Electric Boys, so it was a particular honor for me to sit down with the man who whispered “now dig this,” who played that sitar AND the heavy riff that followed it, with the man who sang and wrote almost everything I love about the Electric Boys music.

This one is… medium hard–like you get when you see sexy photos of your pain-in-the-ass mother-in-law back when she was 25.
The artist doing the Cover Song of the Week is a band who, well, might very well be responsible for the global COVID-19 pandemic. This band has often employed Satanic symbols to promote themselves. There’s even more than one story–written by the band members themselves in one of the best-selling Rock N’ Roll memoirs of all time–recounting supernatural dealings, including one that made them change the title of an album–the day after their producer had himself tattooed with the original LP title.
And, last year, they broke a deal literally signed in blood… right before COVID hit the world. Coincidence? You decide.
What you also need to decide is who you think that band is, because they’re the ones doing the Cover Song of the Week this week.

Let’s talk about the Cover Song of the Week itself. Hopefully by now you’ve already guessed the original writer, a promising Rock guitarist we lost at the tender age of 25, and the band covering that song, a band who likes Satanic symbols and signing contracts in blood. Here’s one stanza from that Cover Song of the Week, with the cadence intentionally altered to make it a little more challenging:
That woman’s got a smile, puts you in a trance
And just one look at her, makes you wanna dance
All those dark and those red ruby lips, only a fool would pass them by
With just a hint of ruthlessness, sparklin’ in her eye
Think about that. The Cover Song of the Week is next.
Did you guess the Cover Song of the Week? How about the original artist or the covering artist?
Let’s start with the original artist, a talented, promising Rock guitarist lost to the world at the age of 25 years ago in Florida. If you guessed that it was Randy Rhoads… well, you’d be wrong. Randy was a different Rock guitarist who died too soon, at the age of 25, also in Florida. Before him, sadly, was Tommy Bolin, who died from a drug overdose December 4th, 1976, in Miami.
In addition to the explicit clues, I gave several subtle hints throughout the show as well. The Quiet Riot track was to throw you off of Tommy Bolin and onto the red herring of Randy Rhoads, but then I also played “Holy Ground” by the Dead Daisies, featuring Glenn Hughes on lead vocals and bass. Glenn and Tommy played together in Deep Purple.
John Lord also played in Deep Purple at the time, and John Lord was part of the supergroup I asked Conny Bloom to build around himself. That was part of my interview with Conny I couldn’t fit on the show, but it is in the uncut video of the interview on PariahRocks.com.
Back to the Cover Song of the Week. The artist performing the cover, the band I jokingly blamed for the COVID pandemic because it happened right after the band announced their intention to tour, something they swore–and signed in their own blood–that they would never do again.
Of course, that band is Motley Crue.
From the 1989 compilation album Stairway to Heaven/Highway to Hell, an album of cover songs written by musicians who had lost their lives to drugs and alcohol, this is Motley Crue with “Teaser,” followed immediately by Tommy Bolin’s 1975 original.
