Loverboy – Lovin’ Every Minute Of It
—————————————-

Loverboy from ’85 kicking us off.

My name is Pariah Burke, and I’m your hard talking, heavy drinking, hairball of a horny hedonist host.

Let’s start the first of the new tracks with a band calling itself The L.A. Maybe. This is “Mr. Danger.”

—————————————-
The L.A. Maybe – Mr. Danger
KISS – Unholy
—————————————-

“Unholy” from Kiss.

Grab a box of tissues. This is the newest from Voodoo Circle, “Eyes Full of Tears.”

—————————————-
Voodoo Circle – Eyes Full of Tears
—————————————-

That one tears at the heart, doesn’t it?

The BulletBoys will bring us back up in a moment.

We’re back with the BulletBoys, “Smooth Up in Ya.”

Your first Cover Song of the Week clue is after new Seether.

—————————————-
Seether – Bruised And Bloodied
—————————————-

Ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue? Remember: the first clue is always the hardest.

The song that is this week’s Cover Song of the Week is one of, and possibly THE, greatest driving song of all time. It’s so famous, it has its own website just to list all the times the song and its “wave in the air” has been used in movies, TV shows, commercials, and video games, and in how many dozens of books its lyrics have been quoted.

More, and easier, clues later.

—————————————-
Banshee – We Want You
—————————————-

That was the song “We Want You” from Banshee’s beloved debut EP, 1986’s Cry in the Night. I’m going to be talking the band next. Don’t leave your seat!

[Feature] [Interview segment – 1] [Interview segment – 2]

It definitely can.

So let’s hear something you guys created together. From the Mindslave LP this is “Floodgates of Hell.”

—————————————-
Banshee – Floodgates of Hell
—————————————-

[Interview segment – 3]

—————————————-
Banshee – Psychosis
—————————————-

We have to break for a station identification, but don’t you go anywhere. My interview with Banshee’s Terry Dunn and George Call continues right after these brief messages.

Welcome back.

I’m Pariah Burke, and I’m joined via Zoom by Terry Dunn and George Call of the Metal band Banshee.

Banshee has been around since 1985, though they sat out the majority of the 90s and early Aughties. George Call replaced original singer Tommy Lee Flood, but guitarist Terry Dunn has been with the band he founded since day one.

[Interview segment – 4] [Interview segment – 5]

What you just heard is only part of the hour-long video interview I did with Banshee. To watch the full, uncut, unadulterated interview, you’ll find it in the show notes for Hard, Heavy & Hair number 291 on PariahRocks.com and on YouTube. If you don’t want to look at our pertry faces, you can listen to the full, uncut interview in the Hard, Heavy & Hair Interviews Podcast, which you can find on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, and everywhere else people listen to podcasts.

Right now, let’s get back to the music with a little band celebrating 40 years together this year. This is Motley Crue and “Girls, Girls, Girls.”

—————————————-
Mötley Crüe – Girls, Girls, Girls
Cheap Trick – Light Up The Fire
—————————————-

New Cheap Trick “Light Up the Fire”.

Here’s another hint in the mystery that is this week’s Cover Song of the Week.

The song is very obviously about a woman, and there’s a woman’s name mentioned more than once during the song, but they’re two different women. The name mentioned ISN’T the name of the subject of the song, the woman about whom the male vocalist sings, the woman whose voice in his head drives his heel.

Think about it.

Cats in Space have some excellent advice for you in their new single. This is “Listen to the Radio.”

—————————————-
Cats In Space – Listen To The Radio
Guns N’ Roses – Live and Let Die
—————————————-

“Live and Let Die” from Guns N’ Roses Use Your Illusion I.

Still coming up is new Anything But Human, the Cover Song of the Week, and new remastered tracks from Love/Hate and Black Sabbath.

Welcome to the rat race. This is new from The Treatment. It’s called “Rat Race.”

—————————————-
The Treatment – Rat Race
Warrant – Heaven
—————————————-

“Heaven” from Warrant. For some, Heaven is more new music, so this is the newest from Tetrarch, “You Never Listen.” So this is the newest from Tetrarch, “You Never Listen.” Heh.

—————————————-
Tetrarch – You Never Listen
—————————————-

Rare Love/Hate and remastered Black Sabbath next.

Out of Dallas, Texas, the band Anything But Human brings us their newest single, “Move On.”

—————————————-
Anything But Human – Move On
Black Sabbath – Tomorrow’s Dream [Remastered] —————————————-

The new 2021 remaster of “Tomorrow’s Dream” from Black Sabbath Volume 4 Revisited.

Bad Reputation Records is also issuing remasters. One of those is Love/Hates’s Blackout in the Red Room. Not only is the reissue crisper and cleaner than the 1990 original, but it also features 7 bonus tracks. Six are live tracks, the seventh, titled “Tinseltown,” follows the title track.

—————————————-
Love/Hate – Blackout in the Red Room
Love/Hate – Tinseltown
—————————————-

Back-to-back Love/Hate. First, “Blackout in the Red Room,” then “Tinseltown.”

Ready for your final hint as to the identity of the Cover Song of the Week?

The original is from two-hit-wonder Golden Earring, who’s got a line in the sky, don’t need a letter at all. The Cover Song of the Week is their more famous hit. The cover version is also the most famous track by this 80s Hair Band that was a Mane Attraction, the Pride of the Big Game, a band that had to Fight to Survive, When the Children Cry.

Know who they are? What the song is? The Cover Song of the Week is next.

[COW]

Have you figured out the Cover Song of the Week from all the hints? Here’s one last, pretty obvious hint: “We’ve got a light in the sky / we’ve got a thing that’s called…” What?”

“Radar Love,” of course!

Golden Earring intended “Radar Love” to be an album track only; they weren’t going to release it as a single. Which would have meant the song would likely receive little radio play. Fortunately, their record label saw the wisdom in releasing “Radar Love,” which was the only hit song on the band’s US debut album–their ninth album overall. It became Golden Earring’s biggest hit.

Some people think it was the Dutch band’s only hit, that Golden Earring is a one-hit-wonder. Savvy music fans know differently. They’re a twofer. In addition to “Radar Love,” which hit number 13 on the Billboard charts, Golden Earring went even further with its number 10 pop single “Twilight Zone,” a song inspired by the original Jason Bourne novel, Robert Ludlam’s _The Bourne Identity_.

Despite “Twilight Zone” charting higher, “Radar Love” is the more enduring song, the song everyone knows. It’s a classic driving song that found its way onto thousands of road trip mix tapes and CDs–especially following White Lion’s 1989 cover.

The band that most successfully covered “Radar Love” takes the notion of hair bands literally with a wild mane of a name.

Here’s Brenda Lee coming on strong, first with White Lion and then with originators, Golden Earring.

—————————————-
White Lion – Radar Love
Golden Earring – Radar Love – Original Single Edit 1973
—————————————-

That was “Radar Love,” the original by Golden Earring following the White Lion version, which is the Hard, Heavy & Hair Cover Song of the Week.

Remember earlier when I dropped the hint that the woman named in the song is not the woman who is the subject of the song? Most people think the song is about Brenda Lee, that the singer is driving toward Brenda Lee. That’s not the case. The woman sayin’ I need you here is never named.

The relevant lines in the song are “The radio is playing some forgotten song / Brenda Lee’s comin’ on strong”. The key to the mystery is that former line–“The radio is playing some forgotten song”–the next line IS that song. The “forgotten song”‘s title is “Comin’ On Strong”, which the singer Brenda Lee released in 1966. By the time Golden Earring put out “Radar Love” in 1973, Brenda Lee was rarely heard any more on the radio, and her song, “Comin’ On Strong,” was all but forgotten.

If you didn’t already know that–and VERY few people do–then you just learned a significant piece of music trivia you can use to impress your friends at a gathering. You might even want to challenge someone for a round of drinks over it.

Here’s a snippet of Brenda Lee “Comin’ On Strong.”
