That was Ace Frehley, the Bronx Boy original lead-guitarist and co-founder of Kiss, covering the Sweet’s “New York Groove.” That version is from the brand new 2020 remaster of the Best of the Kiss members’ solo albums.

In between all this guitar-laden celebration of New York is a subway car full of new music from the likes of the Dead Daisies, Tense Machine, Smash into Pieces, Fallen State, Battering Ram, Motorjesus, King Zebra, and Issa.

AC/DC, “Safe in New York City” the first single from 2000’s Stiff Upper Lip. The lyrics were originally written to criticize Mayor Rudy Giulliani’s controversial “civic cleanup” initiative. The song became unofficially off-limits for radio following 9/11. Even now, as we approach the 20th anniversary of that terrible, horrible day, the effects of which are still felt today all around me in the New York I currently sit in, you’ll rarely hear that AC/DC song on the air. I played it because it’s a good song, it’s AC/DC, and the people of New York are some of the toughest sons of bitches on the planet, and they can take criticism about their history.

Ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue? Remember: the first one is always the hardest.
Let’s talk about the original version of the Cover Song of the Week.
Although this song was written as a parody of 80s Hard Rock and the 80s Rock lifestyle popularized by songs like Twisted Sister’s “I Wanna Rock” and Motley Crue’s version of “Smokin’ In the Boys Room,” and written by a genre-spanning act that was once described by their own Hip Hop record label as coming across as, quote, “the worst sort of blackface band,” unquote, the song was named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. It’s music video is ranked among the 100 Greatest Videos by both VH1 and MTV. VH1 also ranks the song as number 49 on the list of 100 Greatest Songs of the 80s.
That’s your first clue, the toughest clue. They get easier from here on out.
This is another New York native band–two of them, in fact. Joining forces with Long Island–Long Island–Hardcore HipHop masters Public Enemy, this is Anthrax with “Bring the Noise.”

It’s Wildstreet right after Spread Eagle gives you a “Switchblade Serenade.”

If you’ve never been to New York City, it sounds–hell, it smells and feels–like those last two songs. That was Wildstreet with former Sandra Bernhard guitarist Eric Jayk on vocals and lead guitar. The song is “Still Love You.” Before Wildstreet was Spread Eagle with “Switchblade Serenade.”
Speaking of blades, this is new track “Knives” from the Fallen State.

Oh, yeah. Type O Negative is also from New York. That was their biggest hit, “Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scared).” If you’re old enough to remember that song when it was new, then you’re old enough to have dated the chicks with black stains all over their pillowcases. Or maybe YOU had the black stains on your pillow cases. Nothing dyed hair blacker, and ruined more bed linen and bath towels, than that black number 1 hair dye from Hot Topic.
Next up, we’re not gonna take it with another New York native band. Don’t get mugged during the break.
This next band is actually from Long Island, which is not one of the five boroughs of New York City, but every since ’82’s Under the Blade, and most definitely ’84’s Stay Hungry, I have associated them with the gritty, back alley violence, dirty street sound of NYC Street Metal. From that amazing 1984 album with Dee Snyder on the cover gnawing on a giant, meat-covered bone, this is single number 1, “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” from Twisted Sister.

New from German Metallers Motorjesus, that was “Dead Rising.”
Ready for your second Cover Song of the Week clue?
The artist performing the Cover Song of the Week is in his early 70s but is still performing. Back in 1965, his mom paid $39.95 for this big name singer and guitarist’s very first guitar. They bought it at Sears & Roebuck, and it came with a case and amplifier. In 2007, after creating the second-best selling premium tequila brand in the United States, this rocker sold 80% of his interest in the brand for $80 million dollars. Three years later, he pocketed another $11 million for the remaining 20% interest. Not bad for a guy who became popular by singing about rock candy, speeding faster than 55, and poundcake.

I’ve been playing a lot of new Pretty Reckless on the show lately as they work toward releasing their newest album, which comes out very soon, on February 21st. So I thought I’d go back to their big breakout hit, “Heaven Knows,” for you. The Pretty Reckless is also from New York, if you didn’t know.
Once again we have to break for station identification, which is the perfect opportunity for you to find out what you really want to know. I’ll get you started: “Hey, Alexa. Is Taylor Momsen married and would she go out with me?”
I’ve got two classic New York band songs for you, but first, it’s something new from Kickin Valentina. This is “War.”

After the newest from Kickin Valentina was “All or Nothing” from the New York band Sylar, which took its name from the villain in the NBC TV series Heroes. After that was the New York Dolls and “Personality Crisis.” Sadly, guitarist and co-founder Sylvain Sylvain passed away recently, on January 13th, at the age of 69.
I had the privilege of seeing them in concert a few years ago, opening for Poison. We’ll be back in two shakes of a tremolo bar.
Another band you might not have known is from New York was White Zombie. This is “Thunder Kiss ’65,” which you’re going to want to crank way the hell up!

I was walking through Times Square today. I ran in Spider-Man, as one does. If you think I’m full of it, look it up.
I was visiting Manhattan on business in… I think it was 1999. I was doing a thing at with Heather Kozar, the Playboy Playmate of the Year that year, and E! Entertainment television. Yeah, it had to be ’99.
So, I’m at Playboy’s offices on 5th Avenue, right across from Trump Tower. I do my thing with the Playmate, E!, and Playboy Marketing, and then I have to fly out that day to get to another thing. The Playboy Enterprises travel people messed up and got me a ticket out of Newark, NJ, which is a bitch to get to at rush hour in Manhattan. Anyway, I get a cab, and we’re stuck in rush hour traffic. I spill coffee on my suit, so I decide to change clothes, but the cab driver tells me I’ll be running for my gate when we get the airport. I won’t have time to change. So, there I am, at 5 PM in the summer, in full day light, in the back of a taxi, stopped dead in rush hour traffic in the center of Times Square–back when you could still drive through Times Square–people streaming on foot all around the cab, looking in and whatever, and I’m there changing my pants. Obviously I had clothes on the seat under me. No way was I going to let my bare skin touch the vinyl in a New York City taxi cab, but people were seeing my… well, my everything as I changed into different pants in the cab. No one stopped to look. Not even the cab driver cared. Why? New York, baby.
Like Nazareth sings in this next song, I was just another “New York Broken Toy.”

That was Toronto’s Tense Machine with new song “Holding On.” New music and a new baby. I want to congratulate lead singer Dane Hartsell on the birth of his daughter. Congrats, man!
Ok. It’s time for your final Cover Song of the Week clue.
As I noted earlier, the song being covered was written to parody Rock anthems. The intent backfired, making the song one of the most memorable teen angst anthems. Kids, especially those who thought living at home was such a drag, found in this 1986 Hard Rock / Rap Rock fusion song an outlet for releasing their rage against preaching teachers and hypocrite parents who wanted them to cut… that… hair.

[COW]Did you guess the Cover Song of the Week? If you did, then you know the original artist, the one who wrote the Hard Rock / Rap Rock fusion song as a parody of 80s Hard Rock anthems. It backfired, becoming one of the greatest 80s Rock lifestyle anthems. Even those listeners who recognized its original intent ignored the fact that the song was making fun of them because the lyrics were so relatable. Parents hassling you? Teachers treating you like you’re a jerk? What kid CAN’T relate to those themes?

Hell, my mother offered me a thousand dollars to cut my hair when I was 16. That was a lot of money to a teenager. I didn’t cut it. I had to pick up a second part-time job to pay for my car insurance, but I kept my hair. It’s been long ever since, all my life.
The Cover Song of the Week is “Fight for Your Right (to Party),” written by the Beastie Boys and Paul Rubin, and covered by the Red Rocker himself, the man who made more money in one day selling his interest in his tequila brand than during his entire career as a musician, Sammy Hagar.
Like Sammy sings before the Beastie Boys original, you gotta fight, for your right, to parteeeeeeee!
