The Cover Song of the Week original is one many musicians learn from. It’s from a groundbreaking band, one of the originators of Hard Rock. The song features a bass riff the bassist said is, quote, “the hardest riff I ever wrote, the hardest to play.” The guitar player in the song passed his guitar through a Leslie speaker to create a swirling effect. And the legendary drummer used a triplet technique on his bass drum between the hi hat and kick drum in the song.

The Cover Song of the Week is from 2007. It was a new track recorded for this Lawrence, Massachusetts Metal band’s greatest hits album celebrating their first ten years and four studio albums. The album included 15 other tracks, hits you might be familiar with, with titles like “Awake,” “Voodoo,” Shine Down,” and “I Stand Alone,” which was originally recorded for the soundtrack to the film the Scorpion King. What band is that? If you know, then you know who’s doing the Cover Song of the Week.
Think about that. Brand new Sainted Sinners is up after a little golden age Great White. This is “Lady Red Light.”

I’m just going to tell you who wrote and performed the Cover Song of the Week original. It was Led Zeppelin. And the song in question was the very first song the world heard from Led Zep, back in the spring and summer of 1969. Jimmy Page didn’t like to release singles, so this song was the only single from the debut album of the band, and it was also Side A, Track 1. So, if you were old enough in 1969, whether you heard it on the radio or on vinyl or 8-track, the Cover Song of the Week was your first exposure to the legendary, world-changing Led Zeppelin band.
What song was that?
Think about it while we do some recent Dead Daises and a new track from Viva la Wolfe. This is “Holy Ground.”

The covering artist is Godsmack, who recorded this cover for their 2007 greatest hits album.
I already told you the original artist is Led Zeppelin, but there might be some confusion about the clues.
One of the clues I gave you was that the Cover Song of the Week original was the first and only single from Led Zeppelin’s self-titled debut album. Some people might argue with that. What about “Dazed and Confused”, huh? What about “Communication Breakdown” or “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You”? Let me explain: Yes, all those songs get air play on Classic Rock stations, and were often spun on-air in the 70s, too. But that was because DJs loved those album tracks so much. There were never released as official singles. “Good Times, Bad Times” was the only song from Led Zeppelin one released as an actual single. So there you go. You can win a bar bet with that knowledge.
