That was your first of a handful of Dirty 30s. Released 30 years ago this month, that was “Send Me an Angel” from the Scorpions eleventh studio album, Crazy World.

Ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue? Remember: the first clue is always the hardest, the one for hardcore Rock historians and trivialists.

The original recording artist for the Cover Song of the Week is one of those examples of a band name that sounds like a person’s name, but there’s no such person in the band. It’s like Pink Floyd–[Clip – “oh and by the way, which one’s Pink”]–but the artist I’m talking about isn’t Pink Floyd. But where the Pink Floyd band name is a combination of two Blues musicians’ names whom Syd Barrett and Roger Waters admired, the name for the Cover Song of the Week’s original recording artist came from a keychain they saw.

Who is that band?

Oh, yeah. “Girlschool” from Britny Fox’s self-titled 1988 debut LP on Columbia records. Britny Fox is from Philadelphia, as you may recall, but one of their more famous Philadelphia Glam and Hard Rock contemporaries was absolutely torn apart for their release 30 years ago this week. I’ll tell you about that soon, but first is that brand new AC/DC track that I will play for the first time on the radio anywhere in about 3 minutes. Stick around.

Right after a little “Unity” from Shinedown you’ll hear a Dirty 30 from Cinderella that the critics savagely tore apart back in 1990.

That was the title track to Cinderella’s third studio album, 1990’s Heartbreak Station. The album saw Tom Keifer, Eric Brittingham, Jeff LaBar, and Fred Coury digging into their musicality and coming up with ten tracks of Bluesy Hard Rock deeply reminiscent of the Rolling Stones and, at times, old Aerosmith. They enlisted the help of more than two dozen other musicians to expand their sound. Critics were savage about the album, praising the music while kicking Cinderella in the teeth with the same words.

People Magazine said, quote, “The first thing that strikes you about this new album by Poison…er, uh, this new album by Cinderella…is how utterly original it is.” End quote. The review continues largely positive, but then concludes with: “So as I was saying, you can’t go wrong if you buy this new Mötley Crüe record. Ask for it by name.”

The LA Times didn’t show the same Hair Band bigotry–Hairism?–instead panning the music by saying, quote, “Any band that can achieve a good approximation of the Stones’ raw, cranking classic period–as Cinderella does here– at least has the validity of a solid bar band. But Cinderella fails to justify and redeem its stylistic thefts by infusing a borrowed sound with a personal perspective.” Ouch!

The Merkins – Green Child O’ Mine

That’s funny as hell!

The comedy group the Merkins made that. As you may have guessed, the song is titled “Green Child O’Mine” and is a parody about the Disney+ TV series The Mandalorian, which is a space western based on the Japanese story Lone Wolf and Cub. It’s also the best Star Wars story since the original trilogy, helmed by superstar director and writer John Favreau. Season 2 just started, and it took the Merkins only two days to whip up an awesome music video for that song following Season 2, Episode 2. Check out the video, which has Boba Fett, Din Djarin, the Armorer, and others playing Axel, Slash, and the rest of the band–in Mando helmets! Ready for another Cover Song of the Week clue?

Ultimate Classic Rock named the Cover Song of the Week original as the #1 Greatest Southern Rock Sock. Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” was number 2. What song do YOU think could beat out “Sweet Home Alabama” as the Greatest Southern Rock song of all time?

About this song, UCR wrote, quote, “Next time you hear this song in public, take notice and you’ll make the strangest observation, especially if there is booze involved. There seems to be something about this particular song that makes the majority (very ironically) close their eyes and sway their head from left to right while singing the song’s famous [blank] [blank] [blank] line.”

I read that, and I was like, “son of a bitch!” because I had closed MY eyes while singing that choral line just minutes before with the Cover Song of the Week playing here in the studio. We all did it, didn’t we? Tara? Rick? Brianna? You guys sing with your eyes closed, too, don’t you? Yeah. EVERYONE does.

So what classic Southern Rock song, that isn’t “Sweet Home Alabama,” always makes you close your eyes when you sing the chorus? That’s the Cover Song of the Week.

Let’s talk about the band doing the Cover Song of the Week. They’re a modern Southern Hard Rock band that are the genuine ass kickers in shit kickers who gave us songs like these:

Can’t you see? Oh, can’t you see… the Cover Song of the Week, the original recording artist, and the covering artist?

The original song is by a band who took its name from a keychain they saw in the studio. “Marshall Tucker” was stamped on the keychain, which, the band would later learn, belonged to the piano tuner named Marshall Tucker who had been in the studio before them. That didn’t stop them from taking, and sticking with, the name the Marshall Tucker Band, even though, like Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and, originally, the Alice Cooper band, the band wasn’t named after any person IN the band.

Nowadays the Marshall Tucker Band is still touring with the only original member being lead vocalist Doug Gray.

The Marshall Tucker Band’s biggest hit is 1973’s “Can’t You See.” It’s a Southern Rock staple so essential that Ultimate Classic Rock ranked it the number 1 greatest Southern Rock song of all time, beating out even Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” and Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen.”

Taking on “Can’t You See” is one of this generation’s greatest Southern Rock bands, Kentucky’s Black Stone Cherry. Here they are with the Cover Song of the Week, followed immediately by the Marshall Tucker Band original.
