Wow! Can you believe it’s November already? My studio is on the third floor of the building, facing West, right at the tops of the trees blazing beautifully with afternoon sunlight igniting red and orange leaves. Here in the U.S., we just ended Daylight Saving Time, setting our clocks back an hour and screwing up everyone’s interstate and international meeting planning. Some countries follow Daylight Saving Time, some don’t. Even some U.S. states and territories don’t, leading to even more confusion.

Many states have filed petitions to end the practice, and we’re waiting on Congress to give the OK. It’s been done before, you know. Back in 1974, President Richard Nixon made Daylight Saving year-round to help America with the energy crisis created by the ’73 OAPEC oil embargo. Congress nixed Nixon’s nix of DST the following year.

If we do set our clocks forward again, it will be on March 8th, 2021.

For now, though, we might have us some “November Rain.” This is Guns N’ Roses.

That was the newest from Neon Coven, which features on lead guitar Ace Von Johnson, co-lead guitarist of the Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis L.A. Guns. Hmm. I wonder if 2021 is going to bring some resolution the whole dual and dueling L.A. Guns situation?

A band that is not in dispute is AC/DC, ’cause you’ve been… “Thunderstruck.”

I have a funny story to tell you about that song. I’ll share it with you in just a moment after a quick break for station identification.

Two and a half minutes ago I played for you AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck.” I had that same song cranking in my car this past Friday afternoon. As you do when AC/DC is blasting, I was hauling ass, doing at least 80 in a 55. And, I got pulled over.

When the officer gets to my window, he asks me what they always ask, “do you know how fast you were going?”

I said, “I know the NORMAL speed limit is 55, but everyone knows it’s a different speed limit when you’re listening to AC/DC.”

The officer did a double-take, like what I said was the last thing he expected to hear, and then he started laughing. He told me to turn my car on; I did. The last verse of “Thunderstruck” blasted out of my speakers. The cop almost fell over laughing. He wrote me an official warning, but not a ticket. He told me if he hadn’t heard AC/DC when I turned on the radio, it would have been a ticket of more than 500 bucks.

Eventually I exited my car, and the two of us stood on the side of the highway talking Rock trivia, about the show, and about being an officer in these… strange times for a good twenty minutes.

As my way of thanking him, I promised him I’d play whatever song he requested on this week’s show. You won’t BELIEVE what song he picked. First is a couple of recent driving songs from Red Wolf and Crobot, then I’ll play for you a request by the Oregon Highway Patrol officer who pulled me over Friday.

First up, is “The Road” by Red Wolf, a band that came together DURING the COVID-19 lockdown in Sweden.

For the Hard Rocking Oregon State Trooper with a great sense of humor and who–get this–got me going 84 in a 55, here is the song you asked me to play for you. It’s Sammy Hagar’s “I Can’t Drive 55.”

Thundermother, “Driving in Style” following Sammy Hagar and “I Can’t Drive 55” for a helluva cool Oregon State Trooper who pulled me over for speeding two days ago.

Ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue? Remember: the first clue is always the hardest.

The Cover Song of the Week original is by a legendary Rock band whose bassist often wore a real holster and gun on stage. The gun was loaded with blanks, but it did come in handy one night.

At the Nassau Coliseum in outside New York City, the band who authored the hit Cover Song of the Week was opening for Black Sabbath in 1975. Sabbath fans became agitated with the opening act and rushed the stage. The band’s openly armed bassist pulled his pistol and fired a blank into the air, immediately sending the would-be mob into retreat. A couple of beats later, the band was playing again; they finished their set.

Who was that bad ass Rock band that maybe shouldn’t have been booked to open for the Godfathers of Metal?

Welcome back. I’m Pariah Burke, this is Hard, Heavy & Hair.

I am a BIG fan of Tesla. From Mechanical Resonance back in ’86, day one, I was hooked on the straight forward, pure Rock N’ Roll of Tesla. I love so-called Hair Bands–as do you, I’m sure–but in the mid-80s Tesla just stood out for me. They had anthems, they had hooks, they had everything every other band of the day had… but then they had something else in the magic of Frank Hannon, Brian Wheat, Troy Luccketta, and Jeff Keith. To be honest, Tesla’s debut album was the first time I noticed Geffen Records. Before that, Geffen was–at least to me–nothing special. It had potential–David Geffen signing the best of 70s Pop-Rock and snatching up some of the best of 80s New Wave–but it wasn’t until Tesla’s Mechanical Resonance, with that distinctive “G” logo on the back of the cassette, that I thought Geffen Records might do something new and interesting.

Of course Geffen would go on to break Guns N’ Roses, Sonic Youth, and the massive comeback of Aerosmith, but I’ll always associate my first interest in Geffen with Tesla’s debut.

The entire album–every track–is among my favorites, but this is the first track that really hooked me. This is Side A, Track 2, with Frank Hannon’s killer guitar intro that just smacks of an Eddie Van Halen intro. This is “Cumin’ Atcha Live” from Tesla.

The Cover Song of the Week comes from a 1987 album by an American Heavy Metal band that gave the world such moderate and minor hits as “Can U Deliver,” “Reign of Fire,” and “Last Train Home.” They also just released an impressive new album on August 12th titled Punching the Sky.

What band is that? They’re the ones doing the Cover Song of the Week this week.

Think about it while you check out the newest from Every Mother’s Nightmare. From the High Vol Music LP Resurrect the Faithful, this is single “Breathe.”

Do you like White Lion? How about Europe? I’ve two new songs here for you that sound just like White Lion and Europe from their heydays in the 80s. The first, “Take Me Away,” sounds like White Lion because it’s from White Lion frontman and chief songwriter Mike Tramp. The second song, though, is from a band called Creye that sounds an awful lot like fellow Swedes Europe.

It’s time for you final COW clue.

The Cover Song of the Week is about a controversial subject, and feelings about the song lyrics differ–though every Rock fan agrees its an iconic Southern Rock song. The song tells separate stories in each of its three verses, all about brash violence committed with a particular style of handgun. Whether you like “a barrel that’s blue and cold,” or think they should be dumped “to the bottom of the sea” “before some ol’ fool come around here, wanna shoot either you or me,” you’re gonna want to stick around for the Cover Song of the Week next!

Have you figured out the Cover Song of the Week? Of course you did. It’s “Saturday Night Special,” which is an older term for a cheap, easily-obtained, often throwaway handgun. The song describes three different stories of a Saturday night special used in impromptu violence.

When the original artist, Lynyrd Skynyrd, was opening on tour for Black Sabbath, life imitated art when a crowd rushed the stage during Skynyrd’s set, and bassist Leon Wilkeson fired a shot into the air to quell the crowd. The shot was a blank, and Leon had gotten in the habit of open-carrying it onstage as a prop for “Saturday Night Special.”

On their 1987 LP Raising Fear, their last with both Chrysalis Records and guitarist Dave Prichard, Armored Saint put Metal plating on “Saturday Night Special” with this week’s Hard, Heavy & Hair Cover Song of the Week. The original by Lynyrd Skynyrd follows for easy comparison.
