It’s a little two-hour escape from reality we like to call the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show.
And really, right now, can’t we ALL use an escape from reality?
You know what? At this point in the show, I usually tell you what’s coming up, all the new music I’ve got for you, the astounding trivia that’s coming you way, and more. But let’s put that on hold for a few more minutes and just drift away out of reality into a simple time, a better time, when we were all younger, dumber, and fuller of… heh… well, when the world wasn’t as serious.

Y’know, I just thought of something. For an entire generation of people, the first time they’ll have heard AC/DC–particularly “Shoot to Thrill”–is in the first Avengers movie when Iron Man makes his entrance to Stuttgart.

The newest generation of Hard Rockers there. With an average age of 25 years old, award-winning band Mason Hill is on a steep upward progression, as you can hear in their newest, “Against the Wall.”
Ready for a Cover Song of the Week clue?
The first Cover Song of the Week clue is always the hardest. So, I don’t expect anyone but the hardest of hardcore Rock N’ Roll trivializes to guess the original recording artist from this set of clues. If that’s not you: don’t worry. The clues get easier after this.
Let me start off by explaining we’re talking about a band that has been incredibly influential on some of the biggest artists in Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, and, well, just about every genre of music, including Pop and Country. They are still touring, but they haven’t recorded anything new since 1983, three years before their lead singer, co-founder, and principal songwriter died from heroin-related septicaemia.
Before that, he penned some of the most enduring Hard Rock songs of the 70s. He also founded the Greedy Bastards, a Punk side-band, with Paul Cook and Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols. And before all that, he considered becoming a Catholic priest.
Who was that lead singer and, other than the Greedy Bastards, what was his band? That’s the Cover Song of the Week original recording artist this week.

Tenacious D – The Metal

One of the things I love best about Metal and Hair music is that the whole culture doesn’t take itself too seriously. That was Tenacious D and “The Metal” proving my point.
On last week’s show, Hard, Heavy & Hair 271, I wished Lita Ford a happy birthday, and then I got an unusual email from a listener.
Tommy Mulvaney from Warwick, Rhode Island, who listens to the show on 97 Underground, writes: “It was cool to hear you wish Lita Ford a happy birthday. I’ve been her biggest fan for almost forty years, so I know she’s not celebrating her 40th in 2020 like you said…” I know she’s not 40, Tommy. I actually know her real age, but I don’t think Lita looks the age she’s supposed to be. Also, you’re more likely to wind up in bed with a woman you flatter. Your dad should have taught you that.
Tommy continues with, quote: “Given that you don’t know Lita’s real age, let’s see what you DO know. What’s the most obscure fact you know about Lita Ford?”
Wow! That’s a challenge. To be fair–to myself–I have to keep this show accessible to the average fan of Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Hair Bands, so I can’t get SUPER obscure. That said, you and I both know Lita dated Nikki Sixx, right, Tommy? And that this next song, “Close My Eyes Forever,” was written in one night while Lita was high in the studio with Ozzy. Everyone knows that.
But, something everyone may not know, is that Lita is connected to the Bangles.
[clip – Walk Like an Egyptian]And I don’t mean a connection through Prince, who wrote the Bangles hit “Manic Monday.”
Ok. So everyone knows Lita got her start in the Runaways with Joan Jett, Cherie Currie, Jackie Fox, and Sandy West. But before Jackie Fox, Cherie Currie, and even Lita herself, the Runaways were a three-piece with drummer Sandy West, guitarist Joan Jett, and singer/bassist Micki Steele. When Lita joined the Runaways, making the group a quartet, it was Jett, Currie, Ford, and Steele. Steele would shortly be fired and replaced by, for a very short time, Peggy Foster on bass, and then Jackie Fox on bass and Cherie Currie on lead vocals. That was the lineup that got the record deal and initially put the Runaways on the International Rock N’ Roll map.
Micki Steele was the stage name of Susan Thomas. Ms. Thomas later adopted another, related, stage name of Michael Steele. If that doesn’t ring a bell, well, then you’re not a big 80s Pop Rock fan. In 1983, Michael Steele replaced Annette Zilinskas on bass in another all-woman band that was flagging at the time. That all-woman band was the Bangles.
So, Lita Ford joined the Runaways in 1975, shortly before Micki Steele would leave the group. Steele would then go on to be one quarter of the successful lineup of the Bangles. Thus, it’s only one degree of separation between Lita Ford and the Bangles.
And, if you’re curious, Michael Steele is no longer a part of the Bangles. The Bangles sat out the 1990s, but reunited–including Steele–in ’98. Seven years later, Steele left the band and was replaced by original bassist Annette Zilinskas, who remains with the group today.
I hope that works as an obscure Lita Ford track, Tommy. I don’t usually get the opportunity to talk that deep into Rock history on the air, so I’m genuinely grateful for you giving me the reason to. Thank you–sincerely–for writing into the show.

The artist doing the Cover Song of the Week in a brand new release this week is a newer band most notable for the fact that they’re a duo–just two members–who sound like a four-piece live and in the studio. If you already know about them, then you know the two members’ names are Chris Tapp and Brian Mullins.
You heard them debut on Hard, Heavy & Hair 221 back in 2019 with this song:

For your third and final Cover Song of the Week clue, let’s get you some lyrics. I’m not going to give you the chorus because the song is so famous, that would instantly give it away. Instead, here’s a verse from the middle of the song followed by a riff you might recognize.

[COW]When people think of great Black Hard Rockers Jimi Hendrix is the first name that comes to mind–and it should–but right after Jimi should be Phil Lynott, the lead singer, bassist, and main songwriter for Thin Lizzy. Phil was a half-Black Irishman who did almost as much for Rock N’ Roll as Hendrix. Sadly, Phil passed away as the world woke up to 1986. Before then, he penned immortal Hard Rock songs like “Whiskey in the Jar,” “The Boys are Back in Town,” and the Cover Song of the Week.
Thin Lizzy is still touring–2020 and COVID not withstanding, of course–with first John Sykes and then Ricky Warwick taking vocal duties on all the old hits. But they’ve never recorded new music in in the 34 years since Phil Lynott passed away. Instead, all the same members formed a new band, one of my favorites, Black Star Riders, so they could write and record new music together. Personally, I think that’s the way it should be when someone as influential as Phil Lynott passes away… Immortalize the old music, play it for the fans, but form a new project for new creations, if you want to write new material together. But that’s a topic for another time.
Covering a timeless Thin Lizzy classic is a modern duo with a sound that blows you away and almost makes you call bullshit on it being only two musicians.
