I was talking to makeup artist Sharon Marie recently about the cover art for Danger Danger’s self-titled debut album. Do you remember it? Did you have it? It really stuck out among my cassette collection of the time with its fully illustrated, comic book-style cover. This was the first track and the first single, “Naughty Naughty.”

Ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue? The first one is always the hardest, remember.

The original artist this week has never before been an original artist on the Cover Song of the Week. This quintessential 80s Rock band has been the covering artist a few times with songs like “Train, Train” and “We Will Rock You,” but I’ve never before chosen someone else’s cover of one of their songs. Of course, that’s not much of a clue unless you’ve listened to every single Hard, Heavy & Hair for the past several years–and a few of you have, and I love you, but not everyone has. So, here’s a bonus clue: this Los Angeles 80s band has had three notable lead singers including Jaime St. James, Robert Mason, and, well, one of the greatest 80s frontmen who, sadly, passed away 9 years ago this August at the age of 47. The Cover Song of the Week is one of that man’s best known songs with the band.

This is a powerful, heart-wrenching ballad that combines flavors of the Black Crowes and the Stones, a dash of Great White, and an opening screech you’d swear emanated from Prince’s throat. It’s “Over You” by Hellings, named for frontman Brett Hellings.

The Cover Song of the Week is a cover by a newer Croatian Hard Rock and Metal band not many people know. So, let’s keep the clues reasonable and refocus on the original artist. It’s the same artist whose first major accomplishment as the classic lineup was to contribute this song to the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure soundtrack:

Did you guess the Cover Song of the Week song and original artist?

In one of the clues I played a snippet for you of another song by Warrant, a song I said they contributed to the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure soundtrack before the release of their debut album. It was kind of a trick clue. I bet some of you ran to your CD shelves to check the tracking listing for the Bill & Ted’s soundtrack and were confused when you couldn’t Warrant listed. That’s because, although Warrant DID contribute the song “Game of War” to the movie, and part of the song DID play during the movie, it was left off the movie soundtrack album.

If you’re curious when in Bill & Ted’s you can hear Warrant, it’s playing when Bill and Ted get dropped off at home by Bill’s step-mom Missy.

But the Cover Song of the Week is a much better known Warrant song than “Game of War.”

The voice you’re first going to hear singing “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” won the Fender Guitars award for best male vocal of the year 2016 in Croatia. I’m really impressed with this band, which calls itself Animal Drive. They’re on my personal list of rising new Rock stars, bands I want to see become big. Several of the artists I’ve played over the last hour and a half are on that list.

From “Back to the Roots,” their 2019 EP of covers, this is Animal Drive covering “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” followed immediately by the Warrant original from 1991.
