A Dirty 30 there, Judas Priest’s “A Touch of Evil.” The single wasn’t actually released until May of ’91, but the Painkiller LP came out in September of ’90. That was the first album with double-pedaling drummer Scott Travis who helped the Priest achieve a heavier sound.

Ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue?

This first clue is always the hardest, the one for hardcore Rock trivialists.

The Cover Song of the Week original is Hard Rock classic that has inspired many other musicians. Joey Ramone based the very first Ramones single, “I Don’t Care,” on the chords of the main riff from the Cover Song of the Week original. Johnny Rotten wrote a Sex Pistols song in direct response to the Cover Song of the Week original. Legend has it, Johnny auditioned for the Sex Pistols by miming to the original playing on a pub jukebox. Kiss even plagiarized the song on their 1998 Psycho Circus LP, in the non-single track “Dreamin’.”

Brand new L.A. Guns is next… and then a new track by a completely different band named L.A. Guns. Grab a beer. Hell! Grab a six-pack. You’re going to need it when I explain what’s going on with L.A. Guns.

Just what the hell is up with L.A. Guns… And that OTHER L.A. Guns, both of whom just dropped new tracks.

Here’s a drinking game for you: Every time I say “L.A. Guns, take a drink.” Ready to get hammered?

If you don’t already know, there are two active bands, both called L.A. Guns. There is no qualifier before or after either name–not like Great White and Jack Russell’s Great White, the latter featuring the long-time voice of Great White with a different backing band. They’re both L.A. Guns with two completely different sets of musicians.

I know guys in both bands, so I’m going to refrain from expressing an opinion, and just tell you the facts.

In 1983, guitarist Tracii Guns formed the band L.A. Guns. They would take on singer Axel Rose following the breakup of his band, Hollywood Rose, and change the name to Guns N’ Roses. A bunch of rapid-fire lineup changes and different thoughts on directions, and Tracii Guns would leave, go back, and restart L.A. Guns.

Three years later, they released their self-titled debut album featuring drums by Nickey “Beat” Alexander, who, after recording the album, would be replaced by WASP drummer Steve Riley. Riley remained the touring and recording L.A. Guns drummer until… Well, there’s the dispute.

In 2002, Tracii Guns left L.A. Guns to pursue other projects. The rest of the band, including Steve Riley and long-time vocalist Phil Lewis, continued on without him, gigging and recording as L.A. Guns. for 10 more years.

While that was going on, Tracii formed the Tracii Guns Band, but, in 2006, he changed the name of that act to L.A. Guns… While Phil Lewis and Steve Riley were still also touring as L.A. Guns. Not long after, Tracii’s group would also record their own albums.

Fast forward to 2016, Phil and Tracii make-up, and become the core of a new L.A. Guns that includes Ace Von Johnson, Scot Coogan, and Johnny Martin. That leaves Steve Riley as the only continuous member of L.A. Guns… but the VOICE of L.A. Guns and the founder and namesake of the band are now in a different band named L.A. Guns.

Oh, and Steve Riley’s version of L.A. Guns now includes Kelly Nickels, who also played in the classic lineup of L.A. Guns. And Kelly was the one who wrote the band’s biggest hit, “The Ballad of Jayne.”

At the beginning of this year, Tracii and Phil filed suit against Steve and his band alleging a lot of stuff, but also asking to get Steve’s band to stop using the name L.A. Guns. Obviously, with the COVID-19 situation, civil lawsuits are delayed. So, until told otherwise, both L.A. Guns are still active.

And that’s where we are today. With both bands touring and recording as L.A. Guns, with almost identical logos, and lots of confused, and sometimes outraged, people trying to figure out which is the real L.A. Guns.

In an interview recorded just yesterday, Steve told The Classic Metal Show that he feels he has every right to the name and to play and record as L.A. Guns because, to paraphrase, Tracii quit while Steve stayed. Steve wasn’t fired from L.A. Guns; he was hired and never left–from 1988 until now–keeping the band going even as pretty much everyone else quit. So, from his perspective, he’s IN the real L.A. Guns and claims that Tracii is the one who created the current situation by quitting the real L.A. Guns and later naming a different band L.A. Guns.

That was two different brand new songs, by two different bands, both with the same name. First, was L.A. Guns with “Crawl.” Then it was L.A. Guns with “Let You Down.” Do you know which version is which?

Tygers of Pan Tang and “Gangland” from their ’81’ sophomore album, Spellbound. You might have recognized the guitar solo as being the distinctive playing style of John Sykes from Whitesnake and Blue Murder. Of course, ’81 was long before Sykes the Guitar Wizard joined Whitesnake and, after leaving, formed Blue Murder.

A couple of other names you might know are Ted Poley and Steve Brown. Ted was the lead singer of Danger Danger in the 80s and into the 90s, while Steve Brown is the guitarist for Trixter. The two of them have a project called Tokyo Motor Fist, which released its first album back in 2017. Now they’re back with a brand new track off an upcoming second record. This is “Youngblood” from Tokyo Motor Fist.

The band doing the 1988 Hard Rock Cover Song of the Week featured the younger brothers of Quiet Riot’s Rudy Sarzo and Carlos Cavazo as well as a lead vocalist who would go on to front Foreigner. The same album that gave us the Cover Song of the Week also gave us this, the band’s biggest hit:

“The Lumberjack.” That was Jackyl with frontman Jessie James Dupree. These days, Jessie’s singing country with backing band Dixie, Inc., and they’ve got new music coming out. That snippet I played for you is their newest single, “It Didn’t Fall from the Sky (Trucking Uncle Sam)”. Yeah, that whole thing is the title. Only Country music can pull off long titles like that.

Get ready for the uprise, according to Kingdom Collapse and new single “Uprise.”

News about the Motley Crue reunion tour is next.

So, after waiting and waiting to see what would happen, what would re-open, Motley Crue has finally officially postponed a few dates on their big stadium reunion tour with Def Leppard, Poison, and Joan Jett. The July 2nd date at Cincinnati, Ohio’s Great American Ball Park has been postponed, as has the Chicago Wrigley Field concert on August 28th.

What will happen to the rest of the dates? Will they be postponed? Will the tour itself be cancelled? We’ll know soon. Motley Crue will be issuing an official statement with that decision on June 1st.

If you have tickets, it sucks, I know. But whatever happens June 1st, remember what Poison says, and “Cry Tough.”

That was new song “Black Magic” from Souls of Tide out of Hamar, Norway. Their label, Mighty Music, is billing them as “Europe’s… own Greta-Van-Fleet-phenomena.” Uh… I don’t know about that angle, guys.

Anyway. Here’s the first new music by the all new Autograph lineup of Simon Daniels on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Jimi Bell playing lead guitar, Randy Rand on bass, and Marc Wieland on drums. This is “Souls on Fire.”

Ready for your final Cover Song of the Week clue?

The Cover Song of the Week original is from a band who, in the late-60s, claimed to have taken its name from a 17th Century witch who spoke to them through a Ouija board. Later, when the original band disbanded in 1975 and the lead singer set out on a solo career, that frontman took the band’s name for his own individual, personal name, legally changing it it. In fact, almost everyone knows of the septuagenarian Rock god, restauranteur, and golfer, but few people realize that, back when he was Vincent Furnier, the woman’s name he took as his own started as the name of his band.

Have you figured out the Cover Song of the Week, the original artist, and the artist doing the cover this week?

The band covering the song is Hurricane, which included Robert Sarzo and Tony Cavazo, younger brothers of Quiet Riot’s Rudy and and Carlos, respectively, as well as vocalist Kelly Hansen who went on to front Foreigner. And Hurricane is covering a song by a band formerly fronted by Vincent Furnier, a man who later took the name of his band as his own personal name. That wasn’t Vincent Furnier, though. You know him best as Alice Cooper.

Alice Cooper’s breakthrough song was “I’m Eighteen,” released in 1971. It was such an influential song that it helped launch the Ramones and the Sex Pistols, inspiring John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, to directly answer Alice Cooper with the song “Seventeen.” Kiss also plagiarized the song in 1998 with “Dreamin'” on the Psycho Circus album.

Here it is, the Hard, Heavy & Hair Cover Song of the Week, “I’m Eighteen” as covered in 1988 by Hurricane followed immediately by the original Alice Cooper masterpiece.
