“Blind,” the newest from Saint Asonia, just the first of many new Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Hair Band songs on this week’s Hard, Heavy & Hair Show.

From the newest breed of Metal to the founders of Metal, we’re jumping back to 1972 with one of my favorite Black Sabbath tracks. The riff in this song is absolutely my favorite Sabbath riff, and one of the greatest guitar riffs of all time, in my opinion. You have to crank this one up. Just slide your finger all the way to the right on your mobile device, or if you’re listening in the car or on a real stereo, snap that volume knob all the way up! This is “Supernaut” from Black Sabbath, Volume 4.

The artist doing the Cover Song of the Week won a grammy in 1987 for his lead guitar work on the “Top Gun Anthem.” You’re listening to that now. [pause] If you remember the music video for this instrumental theme, the guitarist, who is also this week’s Cover Song of the Week covering artist, had black hair teased up high enough that it could have interfered with Tom Cruises’s flying.

If you don’t know the music video, you might know this guitarist and occasional singer from his six-string work for Vince Neil’s band, Kings of Chaos, and Billy Idol, and for his session guitar work with Robert Palmer, Ric Ocasek, and Michael Jackson.

One year ago this week–on my birthday, as a matter of fact, on March 18th–Netflix and Motley Crue released The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band–in Hollywood, anyway. It started streaming on March 22nd. Can you believe it’s been just a year? That movie made a lot of Crue fans happy–and pissed off a few more–but it also re-introduced Motley Crue to a whole new generation of would-be rockers. Suddenly, Motley Crue’s fanbase swelled to include Millennials and Generation Z-ers who had never paid attention to the Crue before. Sales and streams of Motley Crue soared to the highest heights since the early 90s, AND the response to The Dirt film and the reignited interest in their music, inspired the guys to literally blow up their signed-in-blood cessation of touring agreement and embark on the biggest tour they’ve ever done.

All in just one year.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate that, while we listen to the title track to Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band. This is “The Dirt: Established 1981” featuring Machine Gun Kelly, who plays Tommy Lee in the film.

So what 70s Rock band was a family of Mormons who strayed into Heavy Metal? Find out right after your next Cover Song of the Week clue. It’s a short one.

The band that originally released the Cover Song of the Week is a 70s Glam and Hard Rock band from London. It’s a band that a young Nikki Sixx idolized. You know who that band is if you’re a Motley Crue fan. If you aren’t, there’s another clue coming up.

For now, here’s something else I’ve been teasing you about.

Back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, the Osmonds were a family of musicians from Ogden, Utah who were all members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They decided that they could spread the word of Mormonism through music. They began as a barbershop quartet, which then turned into appearances on wholesome family TV shows like Disneyland After Dark, the Jerry Lewis Show, and then, their own ABC variety show.

Before the Donny & Marie Show hit television–before Marie even joined the Osmonds to record–the five brothers transitioned from Bubblegum Pop to a Hard Rock sound, and, on this next track, even bordering on Heavy Metal. From October 1972, this is the title track to the Osmonds’ fourth studio album. This is “Crazy Horses.”

For anyone old enough to remember the Donny & Marie Show or the Mormon family band the Osmonds appearing on wholesome family shows full of Bubblegum Pop and Old School Country, that is definitely a WTF song. That was 1972 Heavy Metal from the very same LDS family of musicians, the Osmonds. “Crazy Horses” was the Osmonds’ protest song against the air pollution crisis of the early 70s, specifically against automobiles–the crazy horses that never stop and never die.

The Sons of Apollo are the latest in a long string of artists to postpone their tour over Coronavirus concerns. Mike Portnoy put out a personal plea for fans to understand their decision, noting that the band has salaries to pay, buses and hotels to pay for, and losing all show income is a financial disaster for them. If you’d like to read Mike’s letter, I’ve posted it in its entirety on the Hard, Heavy & Hair Facebook Fan Page.

Since we can’t see them live until the all clear is given, we can at least enjoy the latest Sons of Apollo tunes. This is new track “Asphyxiation.”
