Transcript of the Show

[INTRO]

I don’t normally start the show with new music, but on this show, Hard, Heavy & Hair number 240, titled “Death from Above,” a brand new song out of the gate is just the first of many surprises.

And, I’m not eyen going to intro the new song. I’ll leave that to someone else else. Marco?

[ID – Marco Mendoza]

—————————————-
Marco Mendoza – Viva La Rock
—————————————-

The latest brand new solo single from Marco Mendoza of the Dead Daisies, Thin Lizzy, and Black Star Riders. That was “Via La Rock.” And on the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show, that’s exactly what we’re doing: living Rock.

My name is Pariah Burke, and I’m your hard talking, heavy drinking, hairball of a horny hedonist host.

Thank you for joining me.

I’ll tell you about other new music, old favorites, and other things coming up in the next two hours, after Van Halen and AC/DC. This is “Heatseeker.”

—————————————-
AC/DC – Heatseeker
Van Halen – Jump
—————————————-

“Jump” by Van Halen.

Coming up this hour is Whitesnake, Dio, Anthrax, new Gilby Clarke, somebody calling a Big Four Thrash Metal founder old and out of touch, and more.

Rising up the Billboard charts, this is the latest from Godsmack, “Unforgettable.”

—————————————-
Godsmack – Unforgettable
—————————————-

Don’t go away! We’ll be right back with more Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Hair Band hits and deep cuts from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 20-teens, and today, including brand new Posehn and Gilby Clarke right after this.

I’m Pariah Burke. This is Whitesnake, “Crying in the Rain.”

—————————————-
Whitesnake – Crying in the Rain
—————————————-

Coming up is a Big Four Thrash Metal founder being called “Grandpa Metal” by another band’s singer.

Right now, it’s your first Cover Song of the Week clue.

The Cover Song of the Week is a new cover of a pretty new song–between original and cover releases it’s barely been six months. Typically a band chooses to cover a song that’s been around for a while–at least, if they intend to record and release the cover, which this week’s Cover Song of the Week artist did less than six months after the release of the original. But, the covering artist released the song to honor the original artist, and the covering artist is opening for the original artist on tour right now and through the Spring.

The covering artist is a Swedish Heavy Metal band unusual for having three lead vocalists, two men and a woman, all with unique vocal styles. The band’s style is equally singular, with many describing them as some amalgamation of Death Metal but with antithetical uplifting lyrics, Melodic Metal mixed with Melodic Pop, and Power Metal with elements of Metalcore.

Who is that band? That’s the band doing this week’s Cover Song of the Week.

More–and much easier–clues coming up.

Let’s “Stand Up and Shout” with Dio.

—————————————-
Dio – Stand Up and Shout
Shinedown – Sound of Madness
Gilby Clarke – Rock n Roll Is Getting Louder
—————————————-

Brand new tune there from Gilby Clarke formerly of Guns N’ Roses. We’ll hear from G N R a little later.

Before Gilby’s newest, which is called “Rock n Roll Is Getting Louder,” which, it certainly is, was the “Sound of Madness” from Shinedown.

Which Big Four for Thrash Metal founder was recently called derisively “Grandpa Metal” and by whom? Find out next.

The term “Big Four” refers to the four most successful Thrash Metal bands–Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer. In fact, it was an Anthrax song–this next song–that inspired Kerrang! magazine journalist Malcolm Dome to coin the term Thrash Metal, thus renaming the nascent “Speed Metal” genre.

From the Fistful of Metal album, this is old school Anthrax, “Metal Thrashing Mad.”

—————————————-
Anthrax – Metal Thrashing Mad
—————————————-

The only way to get away with jeeringly calling one of the Big Four founders “Grandpa Metal” is if you’ve got some serious Metal cred yourself. Musician, actor, writer, and comedian Brian Posehn has the Metal clout. He co-wrote season 4 of Metalocalypse…

[Metalocalypse clip]

appeared in music videos for Anthrax and A Sound of Thunder as well as the Mandalorian, the Big Bang Theory, and even in Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects, and Brian Posehn is himself a Metal musician with his band Posehn. His new Comedy-Metal album, which features guest appearances by members of Slipknot, Soundgarden, Steel panther, Slayer, and Anthrax, as well as “Weird” Al Yankovic, is out now, having dropped on Valentine’s Day. Posehn describes the album as, quote, “the Chinese Democracy of comedy-metal records. And it didn’t cost 13 million dollars to make.” End quote.

This next track is the title song to Posehn’s new album and guests Big Four alum, Anthrax founder Scott Ian. This is “Grandpa Metal” by Posehn.

—————————————-
Posehn – GrandPa Metal [ft. Scott Ian of Anthrax] —————————————-

New music by Brian Posehn with guest Scott Ian, “Grandpa Metal,” the title track to Posehn’s new album with long list of Metal guest musicians. Are YOU a grandpa Metal? I nope not, because I’ve got new Metal for you soon from, the Hu, I Prevail, and Chester Bennington with his old band, Grey Daze.

Let’s slow things down a bit and check in with Kiss. This is “God Gave Rock & Roll to You II”.

—————————————-
KISS – God Gave Rock & Roll to You II
—————————————-

How about another Cover Song of the Week clue?

Let’s talk about the original recording artist. It’s a Swedish Metal band that takes Metal to a different level because the band’s name MEANS a part of a knight’s suit of armor, though not a particularly glamorous part of the armor.

In keeping with the name, the Cover Song of the Week original recording artist produces Heavy Metal and Power Metal albums with the lyrical themes of heroism, war, and historical battles in the European theatre. They’re latest effort, the 2019 album from which comes the song being covered this week, is a concept album about World War I.

What band is that? What album? Figure that out, and you’re half way to solving the Cover Song of the Week mystery.

Coming up is new music from Tygers of Pan Tang, Cinderella’s Tom Keifer, and more.

Moving up this week to number 4 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, this is I Prevail “Hurricane.”

—————————————-
I Prevail – Hurricane
The Hu – Yuve Yuve Yu (feat. From Ashes to New)
—————————————-

Also charting this week, that was Mongolian Metal band The Hu featuring From Ashes to New on the song “Yuve Yuve Yu.”

You know, I don’t like Gentleman Jack bourbon frozen. I keep my Knob Creek in the freezer, and I love it colder than ice, so I thought I’d try putting Gentleman Jack in there. Nope. Not a fan. It just tastes better at room temperature or even over ice than it does from the freezer.

Let’s get rid of that glass

[glass breaking]

And I’ll pour some ice-cold Knob Creek.

Anybody want my bottle of ice-cold Gentleman Jack? If I let it warm to room temperature again it’ll be ruined, and throwing it away seems like alcohol abuse.

Mmm. Much better.

This is the BulletBoys, “Badlands” followed by something new from Tygers of Pan Tang.

—————————————-
BulletBoys – Badlands
Tygers of Pan Tang – Destiny [Single Version] —————————————-

“Destiny,” the newest from Tygers of Pan Tang. More new music is on the way.

I’m Pariah Burke, and this is Ozzy covering Mountain. It’s “Mississippi Queen.”

—————————————-
Ozzy Osbourne – Mississippi Queen
—————————————-

I almost put this next new song on last week’s Anti-Valentine’s Day Hard, Heavy & Hair Show. According to its writer, Babylon A.D. guitarist Danny De La Rosa, it’s, quote, “a tongue in cheek story of a girl who wants to bring other girls into the relationship and gets mad because her boyfriend likes it too much, but he’s happily having a hard time keeping up.” End quote.

We all get it. If you’re not used to it, or if you’ve been up for two or three days straight, it can be hard to keep up with two or more women. From his forthcoming solo album, this is Danny De La Rosa and “Third Wheel Man.”

—————————————-
Danny De La Rosa – Third Wheel Man
Liberty Lies – United Nothing
—————————————-

From Black Country, England, that was Libery Lies and the song “United Nothing.”

Something new from Cinderella’s Tom Keifer is next, right after Guns N Roses. “Welcome to the Jungle.”

—————————————-
Guns N’ Roses – Welcome to the Jungle
Tom Keifer – Hype
—————————————-

“Hype,” the newest from Tom Keifer formerly of Cinderella.

We’re getting close to the Cover Song of the Week, so for your third and final Cover Song of the Week clue, I’ll make things easier.

I’ve already mentioned that the Cover Song of the Week is a Metal-on-Metal treat for history buff Metalheads, but it’s also from one Swedish Metal band covering another Swedish Metal band, both still active, both still recording, both touring even as I speak. And, if that isn’t enough, what you’re hearing in the background right now is the instrumental version of the actual Cover Song of the Week original.

The song you’re hearing, in it’s non-instrumental form, includes lyrics are about a man from Tennessee drafted in 1917 to join the Great War–World War One. The song’s hero was a real man: United States Army marksman Sergeant Alvin Cullum York, one of the most decorated soldiers in World War I. He received a Medal of Honor for leading the attack described in the 2019 historical Metal Cover Song of the Week. He was also the titular subject of a 1941 biographical film starring Gary Cooper.

The song’s title identifies Sergeant York’s Army division, a division that would later become the first airborne division of the U.S. Army and adopt the slogan “Death from Above.”

Think about it while I play for you more new music, starting with new female-fronted Metal from Upon Wings. Right after, I’ve got for you, if you can believe it, new Chester Bennington vocals.

—————————————-
Upon Wings – You Are My Weapon (Single)
—————————————-

You might be asking yourself if you heard me correctly before that last song. Did I, in fact, say I have for you new Chester Bennington? Yes, I did.

Before Linkin Park, Chester sang for a band called Grey Daze. Back in 2016, Chester started the process of reforming Grey Daze with the intent to record new versions of their old songs and play some live shows. There wasn’t time to re-record Chester’s vocals before his passing in 2017, but, after taking time to mourn him, the other members of Grey Daze finished what he started. They re-recorded their parts, bringing a modern sound to music originally created when Chester was a teenager. Chester’s vocals were kept the same.

All those new versions, from both Grey Daze albums, will be released April 10th in a compilation titled Amends. In something that strikes me as both beautiful and eery, every new track will feature the vocals of an adolescent Chester Bennington. Here’s a sample of that new album. This is brand new music from Chester Bennington and Grey Daze, “Sickness,” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

—————————————-
Grey Daze – Sickness
—————————————-

Wow. Chester Bennington still singing to us from beyond the grave. We’ll be right back. The Cover Song of the Week is next.

[COW]

As I noted during one of the clues, the Cover Song of the Week is a new cover of a pretty new original. The original is a single released in July 2019, the final single (so far), from a Swedish power metal band’s latest concept album. It’s not unprecedented for new songs to inspire covers. Halestorm recorded and released their Metal version of “Heathens” by Twenty One Pilots only five months after the Alt-Pop original became popular because of the Suicide Squad film. Still, covering so fast IS unusual.

The original recording artist, a Swedish Heavy Metal band whose music is thematically about wars and conflicts in, and involving, Europe, is, of course, Sabaton. The band’s name comes from the metal foot covering of a knight’s armor. On their 2019 album, The Great War, which is another name for World War I, they honor a genuine American hero, Sergeant Alvin York, who served in the Army 82nd Division 25 years before it was reorganized into the 82nd Airborne Division, the Army’s first airborne division whose slogan would become “Death from Above.”

Before embarking on their 2020 tour opening for Sabaton, fellow Swedes Amaranthe, a band with three lead singers, recorded a rare cover, their version of the final single from the Great War, “82nd All the Way.”

For your listening pleasure, here is the Metal on Metal, Swede on Swede, new on new, Cover Song of the Week “82nd All the Way”–first by Amaranthe and then the original by Sabaton.

—————————————-
Amaranthe – 82nd All The Way
Sabaton – 82nd All the Way
—————————————-

That was “82nd All the Way” by Sabaton. I included the “History Version” with the introductory monologue for something a little extra special. Before it you heard Amaranthe’s new cover version of “82nd All the Way,” which is the Hard, Heavy & Hair Cover Song of the Week.

And this is “Love Bites” by Def Leppard.
