Transcript of the Show

[INTRO]

You’re listening to the right show if
You don’t wanna beg or plead at all
You don’t want no nine to five

If you wanna be somebody, be somebody, too!

—————————————-
W.A.S.P. – I Wanna Be Somebody
—————————————-

WASP kicking us off with “I Wanna Be Somebody.”

My name is Pariah Burke, and I’m your hard talking, heavy drinking, hairball of a horny hedonist host.

Thank you for joining me.

This next cover song from Danish Hard Rockers Junkyard Drive is a standalone release not included on any album. It was released last year to honor the contributions to the world of Music by the original artist. Cranking up the power on a Michael Jackson hit, this is Junkyard Drive covering “They Don’t Care About Us.”

Junkyard Drive – They Don’t Care About Us
[new] Strong Like Bull – Angry Inch
—————————————-

“Angry Inch,” the latest from Strong Like Bull, a band that describes its sound as like the first cold one you crack open to start the weekend, like your Harley when you fire it up to hit the road, like the smell of high performance octane at a drag race. I gotta say, that’s a pretty good description. I’ve played a couple of Strong Like Bull tracks on the show in recent months, and I’m quickly becoming a fan.

Let’s pivot from the testosterone-laden Strong Like Bull to the Hard Rock world’s paragon of feminine power satisfying that very same itch. This Halestorm “Do Not Disturb.”

—————————————-
Halestorm – Do Not Disturb
—————————————-

I want to hear from my female listeners. How many of you would go up to Lzzy Hale’s hotel room? Let me know on Twitter or Insta @PariahRocks or by direct message on Facebook via the show’s Facebook fan page, The Hard, Heavy & Hair Show.

Hahaha. My sexy in-studio distraction is animatedly volunteering for a hookup with Lzzy.

Would you want her alone or as a three-way?

She said either works, folks. I don’t think the mic is picking her up.

I know how most straight men feel about spending the night with Lzzy Hale, but what about you ladies? Would you go up to her room?

Inquiring minds want to know. Skid Row and Korn is next on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

Welcome to the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show, your weekly dose of Hard Rock, Metal, and Hair Bands from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, and 20-teens, and today, including the latest new releases, your old favorites, and deep cuts and rare hair.

Here’s a deep cut from the 1991 Slave to the Grind LP. This is Skid Row and “The Threat.”

“Blind” from Korn.

Ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue?

The first Cover Song of the Week clue is always the hardest, the one to challenge people with an encyclopedic knowledge of music and music history. Here it is.

The Cover Song of the Week is a new rendition of a very old classic. That original song is a pillar in the foundation of Rock N’ Roll, and helped launch the career of a genuine musical icon–even though much of that song is plagiarized.

The melody and some of the lyrics were adapted from the 16-bar blues song “Crescent City Blues” by Gordon Jenkins. The archetypical Rock N Roll Cover Song of the Week original, released in 1955 by Memphis’s Sun Records, doesn’t even credit Jenkins. The original artist said it was Sun founder Sam Phillips who chose not to credit Gordon Jenkins. Fifteen years later, in 1970, Gordon Jenkins sued and was awarded a $75 thousand dollar settlement by the Cover Song of the Week original recording artist.

More and easier clues later.

Speaking of easy, here’s Ted Nugent ’cause you “Can’t Live with ‘Em”. Crank it up!

—————————————-
Ted Nugent – Can’t Live With ‘Em
KISS – Heaven’s On Fire
—————————————-

Kiss, “Heaven’s On Fire” from ’84’s Animalize LP. It was written by Paul Stanley and the hit factory known as Desmond Child. That track featured the late Mark St. John on lead guitar. His only video appearance with Kiss was in the music video for that song, and, because the Animalize album front cover didn’t feature photos of the band members, Mark St. John is the only member of Kiss whose face hasn’t graced the cover of a Kiss album.

Godsmack, Dokken, and Apocalyptica is coming up on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

I mentioned that I have someone in the studio with me, keeping me company in various lewd and lascivious ways, just like last night after her set at Casa Diablo, Portland’s Vegan strip club, and i–

–Ah! Brianna just informed me that Casa Diablo is the WORLD’s ONLY Vegan strip club, and it just so happens to be located here in Portland. So, that’s another thing my favorite city has going for it.

Anyway, I was in a serious, committed, monogamish relationship with someone for a very long time, almost two weeks, and she recently had to follow her dream and move down to Los Angeles. Brianna is here helping me get over that heartbreak in the best possible way. But before our eyes and souls connected over a pile of 2-dollar bills at the rail last night, I had this next Theory of a Deadman song stuck in my sad head on repeat.

The best way to excise a song stuck in your head is to share it, so here you go: “Santa Monica” by Theory of a Deadman.

—————————————-
Theory Of A Deadman – Santa Monica
—————————————-

Ah. That helps. Now I can stop “Crying Like a Bitch.” Haha This is Godsmack.

—————————————-
GodSmack – Cryin’ Like A Bitch
—————————————-

To paraphrase the great philosopher and stopper of the Evil Dead, Ash Williams, gimme some sugar, Brianna, “Here Comes the King.” This is brand new Dirty Shirley.

Dirty Shirley – Here Comes the King

For your second Cover Song of the Week clue I’d like to talk about the covering artist, but won’t know them. The Cover Song of the Week is the very first single by this new band from Saskatchewan, Canada. The only people who MIGHT know the band are listeners of Saskatchewan’s Pure Rock Radio, one of the local and Internet stations that have been carrying the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show the longest. For the rest of you, let’s focus on the original artist.

Here are a few facts about him that you might know.

With 13 number 1 songs in his career, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll, Country Music, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame.

He was born without a real first name.

He was an ordained minister. Though he didn’t preach, he did officiate his own daughter’s wedding.

While not political, the man who originally recorded the Cover Song of the Week became friends with every U.S. President during his lifetime, starting with Richard Nixon and including Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. He was closest to Jimmy Carter, who was distantly related to his wife.

Though he often played concerts in prisons, he only ever spent one night in jail.

Some classic Hair and some seriously good news is coming up.

—————————————-
Apocalyptica – I Don’t Care
—————————————-

How badass would it be to be able to say, “yeah, I’m a Heavy Metal cellist who can shred Dvorak and Metallica?” That was Apocalyptica from Helsinki, Finland, featuring three classically trained cellists with guest vocalist Adam Gontier of Saint Asonia and Three Days Grace.

And this is Dokken.

—————————————-
Dokken – Prisoner
L.A. Guns – Electric Gypsy
—————————————-

That was “Electric Gypsy” off LA Guns’ ‘1988 self-titled dubut following Dokken with a pseudo-single/quasi-deep cut. “Prisoner” was a limited release promo from ’87’s Back for the Attack–Dokken’s fourth and best selling studio album–so the song is in a grey area that falls somewhere between single and deep cut.

Let’s do one more hairy deep cut, then I have great Thrash and genuinely good news to share. This is Warrant.

—————————————-
Warrant – Hollywood (So Far, So Good)
—————————————-

[Sigh] Jani Lane’s birthday just passed on February 1st. He would have been 56. That was “Hollywood (So Far, So Good),” a deep cut from Jani and Warrant’s 1992 Cherry Pie followup album, Dog Eat Dog, produced by the phenomenal Michael Wagener.

Even as we miss Jani, here’s some good news: Dave Mustaine has announced that he’s now 100% cancer-free! You may remember he was diagnosed in May of 2019 with throat cancer, a type of cancer that is notoriously difficult to cure. But from the stage at a Megadeth concert in London, Dave announced that, after 51 radiation and 9 chemo treatments, his doctor pronounced him 100% cancer free!

That is incredible! I’m sure I speak for Megadeth fans and other human beings all over the world when I say I am ecstatic to hear that! Congratulations, Dave!

As transcribed by Ultimate-Guitar.com, Dave went on to reference the line in the song “Peace Sells” that alludes to praying to God. He said praying helped him beat the cancer because he simply couldn’t face not playing music again.

You can read that full transcript and see the cellphone footage of the concert it was taken from in the show notes for this, show number 238, on PariahRocks.com.

Here’s to you, Dave, kicking cancer’s ass. This is Dave Mustaine and the rest of Megadeth with a song he wrote and which came back to help inspire him, “Peace Sells.”

—————————————-
Megadeth – Peace Sells
—————————————-

Still coming up is the Cover Song of the Week, Serious Black, Ratt, Bad Business, Stone Sour, Ragdoll, and more!

Let’s go old school with Dio before a double-shot of newer songs ’cause we’re all “Rock ‘n’ Roll Children.”

—————————————-
Dio – Rock ‘n’ Roll Children
—————————————-

And here’s the latest from Kickin Valentina followed by PSSR with Frank Ferrer and Richard Fortus. Are you ready to “Sweat”?

—————————————-
Kickin Valentina – Sweat
PSSR – Busted
—————————————-

That was “Busted” from PSSR, the new band founded by former Guns N’ Roses drummer Frank Ferrer. You might have also recognized the guitar work of former GNR bandmate Richard Fortus on lead, too.

I’m Pariah Burke. You’re listening to the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show. From Perth, Australia, this is Ragdoll with “Shine.”

—————————————-
Ragdoll – Shine
Bad Business – Suicide City
—————————————-

“Suicide City” from Bad Business.

This week Serious Black released their new album Suite 226 on AFM Records. This is my favorite track from that album, “When the Stars Are Right.”

—————————————-
Serious Black – When the Stars Are Right
—————————————-

Serious Black, a serious band that sounds a lot like recent Ghost. Their name, by the way, is spelled using the correct, normal spellings, not like the Harry Potter character.

Your third and final Cover Song of the Week clue is much easier than the previous two.

Some time before his many arrests, before even considering that he’d fake the sound of a snare drum with a dollar bill under this guitar strings, the original recording artist wrote the song while in the Air Force. He said that, at the time, he tried to think of the worst reason a person could have for killing another. His pen then scratched out one of the most striking and memorable lines in the entire song. It’s a line that goes, “But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.”

Think you know the song and the Man in… well, the man who wrote it? Find out in just a minute! The Cover Song of the Week is next.

[COW]

How do you think you did guessing the Cover Song of the Week?

Gordon Jenkins wrote the melody and a good portion of the lyrics in his 16-bar blues song “Crescent City Blues,” but it wasn’t until a young airman based in Germany in 1953 sped it up and added his own flair to the lyrics did the music become ready for an icon. That airman, whose mama named him J.R. Cash–no first name, just initials–and who had to change his name to John R. Cash upon entering the U.S. Air Force at age 18, would come home to record the song he penned so far away from home.

That song would define the career of the Man in Black in so many ways.

Although Johnny Cash was arrested seven times–usually misdemeanors related to drugs and alcohol–he never spent more than a single night in jail each time. And he never went to prison–not as a prisoner, though he did play concerts at Folsom and San Quentin prisons.

Now, a brand new band out of Saskatechewan, Canada by the name of Seven Strait put their stamp on Johnny Cash’s iconic song “Folsom Prison Blues” as a new Hard Rock version in the Cover Song of the Week.

Without further adieu, here’s Seven Strait’s version of “Folsom Prison Blues” followed by the original by the man himself, Johnny Cash.

—————————————-
Seven Strait – Folsom Prison
Johnny Cash – Folsom Prison Blues
—————————————-

That was “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash following the Hard, Heavy & Hair Cover Song of the Week, a rendition of the same song by Seven Strait out of Canada.

Speaking of Canadians, these guys recently crossed the border and invaded the U.S. for a short run of shows in New York and nearby areas. This is Tense Machine, “I Won’t Throw It Away.”

My name is Pariah Burke, I’m your hard talking, heavy drinking, hairball of a horny host and producer. Thank you for joining me for this week’s Hard, Heavy & Hair Show.

I also want to thank my new friend Brianna from the world’s only Vegan strip club, Casa Diablo, for joining me in the studio today and keeping my blood flowing from one head or the other.
