Transcript of the Show

[INTRO]

Let’s kick off the show with rare hair from 2003 because, as Heavy Pettin’ is about to tell us, “Rock Ain’t Dead.”

—————————————-
Heavy Pettin’ – Rock Ain’t Dead
—————————————-

Welcome to the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show, your weekly dose of Hard Rock, Metal, and Hair Bands from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, and 20-teens, including the latest new releases, your old favorites, and deep cuts and rare hair.

My name is Pariah Burke, and I’m your hard talking, heavy drinking, hairball of a horny hedonist host.

Thank you for joining me.

I have to ask: Did we make Rock N’ Roll, or did Rock N’ Roll make us? Who made who?

—————————————-
AC/DC – Who Made Who
—————————————-

That was AC/DC, and this is the latest from Godsmack followed by Motionless in White.

—————————————-
Godsmack – Unforgettable
Motionless in White – Another Life
—————————————-

Motionless in White with “Another Life” following Godsmack’s “Unforgettable.”

Coming up this hour I’ve got for you…

======================================== TEASERS

We’ll be right back with old, old Motley Crue.

—————————————-
Mötley Crüe – Public Enemy #1
—————————————-

Motley Crue and “Public Enemy #1” from the Crue’s 1981 debut album.

You know the Crue is embarking on a mega-sized stadium tour with Def Leppard, Poison, and Joan Jett. Well, they just added a fifth band to the lineup, and it’s not anyone you’d guess. Go on. Try.

Nope.

Not them.

Uh, no, not them.

The fifth band joining the Motley stadium tour is an almost unknown. Going solo after nine years as the frontman for Atlanta-based band the Biters, Tuk Smith and his backing band the Restless Hearts is the newest addition to the tour. Here’s their first single, “What Kinda Love.”

—————————————-
Tuk Smith & the Restless Hearts – What Kinda Love
—————————————-

Tuk Smith and the Restless Hearts, the 5th band on the Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison, Joan Jett stadium tour.

Let’s speed things back up with new Diamante and old Dokken, and then I’ll give you your first Cover Song of the Week clue.

—————————————-
Diamante – Obvious
Buckcherry – Whiskey in the Morning
Dokken – It’s Not Love
—————————————-

Dokken, “It’s Not Love” following Buckcherry, “Whiskey in the Morning,” and Diamante’s new single “Obvious.”

IT’s time for your first Cover Song of the Week clue. Remember: the first one is always the hardest.

The original recording artist is a household name Rock band, but back in the early 70s, they were struggling to make it, and they have a Cleveland, Ohio DJ to thank for their big break.

In 1974, DJ Donna Halper at WMMS started playing the last track off a self-published album from an unknown Canadian band. Halper liked playing music no other station was playing, so she liked playing deep cuts–something we have in common. The song’s lyrics were also relatable to the predominantly blue collar Cleveland, and, at 7 minutes and 7 seconds running time, it’s a good toilet track, a song long enough to allow a DJ a bathroom or even smoke break.

More and easier clues later.

This is Hard, Heavy & Hair. I’m Pariah Burke. And “Here I Go Again” with Whitesnake.

—————————————-
Whitesnake – Here I Go Again ’87
Shanghai – Please Me Tease Me
—————————————-

Rare hair from the band Shanghai, “Please Me Tease Me.”

From light and airy Glam so something a little heavier–in a couple of senses.

I was driving down the road with a friend of mine shortly before Thanksgiving. We were listening to Bad Wolves Fall 2019 LP N.A.T.I.O.N. and the song “Sober” came on. My friend had never heard the song, but he played it two more times. He was crying by the middle of the second repetition.

After the third, he asked me to pull the car over.

He was quiet for a while, and then he said four words to me: “I’ve got a problem.”

Two days later, he checked himself into rehab.

He got out a few weeks ago. It hasn’t been easy for my friend. He’s fallen off the wagon a couple of times, and it’s been just as hard on his wife. But he’s trying. She’s trying. And they’re going to get through it.

If you have a problem, seek help from the people who love you. There is a brighter day on the other side of addiction.

This is the latest single from Bad Wolves, “Sober.”

Bad Wolves – Sober
Pop Evil – Be Legendary
—————————————-

Pop Evil and “Be Legendary.”

Still coming up is the Cover Song of the Week, new H.E.A.T., Aphelion, Psycho Hill, and more.

Straight out of Sweden, this is GAIN/Sony Music recording artist H.E.A.T. and their brand new single, “One by One.”

—————————————-
H.E.A.T – One by One
Queensrÿche – Jet City Woman
—————————————-

Turning Dirty 30 this year, Queensryche’s 1990 Empire gave us that song, “Jet City Woman”.

Ready for clue number 2?

The Cover Song of the Week is a brand new Hard Rock release from a mostly Alternative Canadian band. Their music has been featured in The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Draft Day, and the 2003 The Italian Job, and they have songs licensed for use by the NHL, NBA, MBA, NFL, CFL, ESPN, and NASCAR. This band even made news back in 2011 for securing permission from none other than Neil Young to sample his hit “Old Man.”

Who is that covering band?

If you’re still stumped, the third clue will be much easier.

This is “Everything” from Dead Girls Academy.

—————————————-
Dead Girls Academy – Everything
—————————————-

Hailing from Baltimore is this next act and not to be confused with Seattle-based Death band ApHelion, Aphelion is a melodic Hard Rock band whose name means the farthest point from the Sun. Fitting, then, that they named this brand new song “I’ve Lost the Moon.”

—————————————-
Aphelion – I’ve Lost The Moon
—————————————-

Still more Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Hair Bands from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 20-teens, and 2020 coming up this hour on Hard, Heavy & Hair!

Full speed ahead! No lookin’ back! It’s Black N’ Blue, “Autoblast.”

—————————————-
Black ‘n Blue – Autoblast
—————————————-

Are you a fan of the band Tesla? I’m a huge Tesla fan. So I was stoked to get this latest solo single by Tesla guitarist, co-founder, and co-songwriter Frank Hannon. This is “South Side.”

—————————————-
Frank Hannon – South Side
Papa Roach – Dead Cell
—————————————-

From the Queen of the Damned soundtrack, that was “Dead Cell” by Papa Roach.

I’m Pariah Burke, and you’re listening to the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show. One things’ for sure: there’s nothing without love. This is Bon Jovi.

—————————————-
Bon Jovi – Without Love
—————————————-

Let’s talk again about the Cover Song of the Week original and the band that recorded it. It’s one of the few popular songs by this band not co-written by the drummer, a drummer the world lost last week. But, when playing it live, this legendary drummer made the song his own by bending it and twisting around–a different way each time–and playing his drum solo to the COW original.

Here’s a bonus hint.

When the Cover Song of the Week original first began airing in the mid-70s, the singer’s voice was confused with Robert Plant’s. Radio listeners thought the COW original was Led Zeppelin’s newest. Metallica’s Kirk Hammett even told Martin Popoff that the COW original sounded most like this next song that IS by Led Zeppelin.

—————————————-
Led Zeppelin – Heartbreaker
Psycho Hill – June
Rough Cutt – Dreamin’ Again
—————————————-

“Dreamin’ Again” by Rough Cutt following new Psycho Hill track, “June,” and, before that, “Heartbreaker” by Led Zeppelin helping you with a Cover Song of the Week clue. The Cover Song of the Week itself is next, and you can see if your guesses about the song, the covering artist, and the original recording artist are correct.

[COW]

Last week the Rock world unfortunately lost Neil Peart, one-third of the band Rush. He was 67 and had been battling a type of brain cancer called glioblastoma. In an unplanned coincidence, the band Redlight King released as a single their cover of a Rush song. The single had been recorded months ago, and slated for release almost as long ago. It just happened to come out the same week we lost Neil. I thought it fitting to make it this week’s Cover Song of the Week.

Ironically, the Cover Song of the Week is one of the few Rush songs Neil Peart didn’t co-write; it was written before he joined the band. He made the song “Working Man” his own, though, by warping and twisting the drum line differently almost every performance, and usually making it the center piece of his concert drum solos. It was also the last song Rush ever played live, ending the last show of their final tour, August 1st, 2015 in Los Angeles. A year later, Neil would develop the cancer that would ultimately take his life. Only his closest friends knew about it until it was announced, three days after his actual passing, on January 7th, 2020.

This week’s Cover Song of the Week is dedicated to one of the most talented and hardest working Rock N’ Roll drummers of all time, Neil Peart, whose passing shocked the entire Rock world.

This is “Working Man,” first the 4-and-a-half-minute cover by fellow Canadians Redlight King, and then the full 7-minute original masterpiece by Rush.

This is Atreyu, “Do You Know Who You Are.”

Thank you for joining me on this week’s Hard, Heavy & Hair. I’m your hard talking, heavy drinking, hairball of a horny host and producer, Pariah Burke.

If you missed any part of this show, you can stream it again on-demand 25 hours a day, 8 days a week, from PariahRocks.com, that’s P-A-R-I-A-H-R-O-C-K-S-dot com.

I’ll be back on this station next week at the same time with another all new Hard, Heavy & Hair Show. Join me then and we’ll bang our heads, throw our horns, and strum our air guitars all over again.

Let’s end the show by paying our respects to Rush’s Neil Peart one more time. Neil was a genuine legend in Rock N’ Roll, and his legacy will continue for generations to come in his music and songwriting. Every generation has its modern day warriors with mean, mean pride. “Tom Sawyer” is going to play us out.
