Transcript of the Show

[INTRO]

I’m Pariah Burke. As your mama dun told you, I’m the Devil, just the Devil, is all. In these darkest hours, I’m reciting the incantations of devil’s music that debuted in 2019, starting with the title track to the one, true LA Guns 2019 LP, The Devil You Know.

—————————————-
L.A.Guns – The Devil You Know
—————————————-

Thank you for joining me.

My name is Pariah Burke, and I’m your hard talking, heavy drinking, hairball of a horny hedonist host.

On this first episode of 2020, we’re taking stock of the best new Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Hair Band songs the past year gave us.

One of those songs is “Via La Victoria” from Swedish band Eclipse.

—————————————-
Eclipse – Viva La Victoria
Fever 333 – One of Us
Saul – Brother
—————————————-

Saul made a splash in 2019 with that song, “Brother,” which is dedicated to the founders’ brother who died of the H1N1 virus. Before Saul was “One of Us” from Fever 333.

2019 also reminded us that Rock N Roll is far, far from dead with stripped down music like the Struts, Greta Van Fleet, and Dirty Honey, who put out this next song, “When I’m Gone,” this past year.

—————————————-
Dirty Honey – When I’m Gone
Hellyeah – Welcome Home [Radio Edit] —————————————-

Hellyeah and “Welcome Home.”

No one can argue that Rock is back and hard as ever. And some artists we haven’t heard from in nearly two decades took the opportunity this past year to make their triumphant returns. Among them, Roxy Blue, Whitesnake, Ozzy, and others you’ll hear from later, as well as the quintessential New York Street Metal band, Spread Eagle. Here they are with their first new music in almost 20 years, “29th of February.”

—————————————-
Spread Eagle – 29th of February
The Defiants – U X’d My Heart
—————————————-

“U X’d My Heart” from the Defiants, a project from three members of Danger Danger.

This is Ghost with “Kiss the Go-Goat.”

There are often threads of related subjects or themes running through a year’s Rock songs. Satanism was one of the big ones in 2019. Oh, I know Ghost is all about that–it’s their schtick–Hot Topic Satanism one critic said–but it goes beyond Ghost. LA Guns started the show with the title track to their 2019 LP The Devil You Know. Then there’s Ozzy’s new music and this Fall-From-Grace-esque song from Sons of Apollo. This is “Goodbye Divinity.”

—————————————-
Sons Of Apollo – Goodbye Divinity [Radio Edit] Volbeat – Last Day Under The Sun
—————————————-

Volbeat’s most popular single in a long time, that was “Last Day Under the Sun.”

Coming up is Mongolian Metal, the Artist of the Year, the Cover Song of the Year, and more 2019 new music about love, pain, and being strong alone and together.

Right now, this is Alter Bridge, “Wouldn’t You Rather” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

2019 was, among other things, a year of discovery. I personally discovered Old Granddad 114 bourbon, which I’m drinking chilled right now. Collectively we fell in love with Baby Yoda and a Samurai-gunslinger character so badass that it made even the most disillusioned Star Wars nerd remember why Star Wars was cool. And, 2019 was a year of discovery for whole new generations of new Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Hair Band listeners.

Even if, like me, you’re a veteran headbanger, try to listen to the following 2019 songs through the ears of a new fan, of someone hearing these artists for the first time. Let’s start with Whitesnake, “Shut Up & Kiss Me.”

—————————————-
Whitesnake – Shut Up & Kiss Me
Ozzy Osbourne – Under The Graveyard
—————————————-

“Under The Graveyard” from Ozzy Osbourne. When Ozzy did guest vocals on rapper Post Malone’s song “Take What You Want,” legions of Posty Toastiess–I don’t know if that’s what Malone’s fans are called, but if they aren’t, they should be–so legions of Posty Toastiess were suddenly exposed to a singer–Ozzy–these kids thought was a NEW, unknown artist. I had a lot to say about it–including a bunch of quotes from Posty Toasties–back on Hard, Heavy & Hair no. 217, the “Back to School” show, if you’re interested.

Someone else entire new generations discovered this year is my choice for 2019’s Artist of the Year. Whether you love them or hate them, there is absolutely no doubt that 2019 was the Year of Motley Crue. Their auto-biographical film The Dirt was the highest audience-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes, and its presence on Netflix exposed Motley to massive population segments who’d only thought of the Crue as their parents’ music. The result was millions of new streams and sales of Motley Crue’s music. It also inspired the Crue to tear up their 2015, signed-in-blood, cessation of touring contract and line up a slew of new stadium dates this coming year.

Here’s the theme song to the movie that made Motley Crue 2019’s Hard, Heavy & Hair Artist of the Year. This is “The Dirt, Established 1981, featuring Machine Gun Kelly.”

—————————————-
Mötley Crüe – The Dirt (Est. 1981) [feat. Machine Gun Kelly] —————————————-

2019 was also a year of discovery for me. Not only did I find out just how sexually adventurous triplet sisters can be, not only did I find whole new places to pass out drunk, but I also discovered that tribal themes and brotherhood are alive and well in Mongolian Metal, thanks to the HU–H-U, not W-H-O. Here is “Wolf Totem” by the HU featuring Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach.

—————————————-
The HU – Wolf Totem (feat. Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach)
—————————————-

Man! That gets me so pumped up. That’s such a powerful song of brotherhood.

This is “Dreamer” from one-man-band Brave the Royals followed by Boston Manor and Roxy Blue.

—————————————-
Brave The Royals – Dreamer
Boston Manor – Halo
Roxy Blue – How Does It Feel
—————————————-

“How Does It Feel” from Roxy Blue, another band making a comeback in 2019 after nearly 20 years. Before that was UK artist Boston Manor with “Halo.”

This is Korn, “You’ll Never Find Me,” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

—————————————-
Korn – You’ll Never Find Me
—————————————-

For me personally 2019 was a rough year. I got my ass kicked a few times by the Universe. Just a week ago I lost my best friend [unintelligble]

But 2019 was a good year, too. I made new friends and met some truly amazing freaking people. I did cool things, went to amazing places, saw killer live music, spent a lot of time with great friends and loved ones, The Hard, Heavy & Hair Show had it’s 200th episode! and I grew as a human being. Yeah, I know: the idea of ME actually growing and changing is mind-blowing, but, yes, even I can evolve within the limits of my troglodytic genome.

In all seriousness, I had a… an eventful year with some soaring highs and plummeting lows. If that describes your year, too, maybe these 2019 songs will help you. I know they helped me.

—————————————-
Scott Stapp – Purpose For Pain
Disturbed – No More
Bring Me the Horizon – Mantra
—————————————-

In order, that was Creed’s Scott Stapp solo on “Purpose for Pain,” then “No More” from Disturbed, and finally, a lighting things up a little, Bring Me the Horizon with “Mantra.”

This week there isn’t a Cover Song of the Week, but there is a Cover Song of the Year.

2019 brought us plenty of new Hard Rock, Metal, Prog, and Glam cover songs from artists like Meytal, LA Guns, Shark Island, Buckcherry, Forth, Gears, Hurricane, and more. This year even gave us two songs tied in my mind for the most unlikely cover songs ever.

First, is, well, this, which is only slightly less surreal recorded than it is to watch performed live. Here’s a short clip from the song.

[Clip – Abney Park – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang]

Yes, that absolutely was a cover of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” the theme song to the 1968 film of the same name about a magical flying car driven, or piloted, by Dick Van Dyke. The artist you just heard is Abney Park, the pioneer of the musical genre known as Steampunk. If you’d like to listen to that entire song or something else from Abney Park’s new album Iconoclast, hit the show notes for Hard, Heavy & Hair 234 on PariahRocks.com.

Tied with that song for the most unlikely cover song released this year is another new Motley Crue one from the soundtrack to the Dirt. Here’s a clip.

[Clip – Motley Crue – Like a Virgin]

That’s enough of that. Vince Neil singing Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” That’s nuts.

This is my choice for the Cover Song of the Year 2019. From the video game Gears 5, this is Evanescence’s take on Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain.”

Badflower – Heroin
—————————————-

“Heroin” by Badflower, which hit Number 1 on the Billboard Rock Charts in March 2019.
