Why don’t we get back to the music with something new? This is brand new Hellyeah from their upcoming album Welcome Home. That LP, the last one founding member, drummer Vinnie Paul recorded before his death in June last year, will be out September 27th. This is “Perfect” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

Every Mother’s Nightmare with their latest single. “Southern Way” originally appeared on 2001’s Back Traxx LP released by Perris Records, but that album was reissued this year by HighVolMusic. Remastered by Bill Chavis, the 2019 Backtraxx includes bonus tracks not available on the 2001 album. “Southern Way” is the first single from the 2019 version of EMN’s album.
Ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue?
The Cover Song of the Week original was written around 1953 by R&B singer Don Covay. Covay was NOT the first to record the song, though he later put a version on wax that was nowhere near as successful as the original you’ll here later in the show. The original recording artist of the Cover Song of the Week released it in 1967, on an album that is legendary for its emotion as it was recorded while the female singer worked to end her physically abusive marriage. She would go on to win a Grammy for the song in 1969.
The first clue is always the hardest. They get easier as we go along.

If you want to feel old, that Whitesnake album turned 30 TWO YEARS AGO. The followup to it, Whitensnake’s third consecutive platinum album, 1989’s Slip of the Tongue, turns 30 in November. In October, Rhino Records will be putting out a 30th Anniversary box set of the record that gave hits like “Fool For Your Loving” and “The Deeper the Love”. Following the lead of such bands as Guns N Roses, the Slip Of The Tongue: 30th Anniversary Edition will be available October 4th in multiple editions. First, in a gargantuan 6-disc boxed set that includes the remastered album, a CD and a DVD of Whitensake’s 1990 Monsters of Rock performance, bonus tracks, unreleased studio recordings, and more plus a 60-page hardcover book of Whitesnake memorabilia. That will set you back 75 dollars. For another 10 bucks you can get the limited edition lithograph signed by David Coverdale himself, but only from Rhino.com.
If the boxed set is too much Coverdale for you, there will also be a 25-dollar double-CD Deluxe Edition and a single-disc for $9.98 with the remastered Slip of the Tongue plus single B-sides and alternate recordings. You can also buy digital downloads of the music if plastic disks of any size are too antiquated for you.

[BREAK 2]I’m Pariah Burke. I’ve got brand new Tom Keifer for you, but first, we say goodbye to a very popular feature of the show.
After many false starts and years of effort, in partnership with Netflix, Motley Crue was finally able to bring their biopic The Dirt to the world. That makes 2019 the Year of The Dirt. To celebrate the movie, new music by the Crue, and a whole new generation discovering the music Vince, Nikki, Tommy, and Mick have been making since 1981, I created a few feature of the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show called Cruel Crue Summer.
Every week this summer I played for you two back-to-back Crue songs–one Motley masterpiece and one rare or deep Crue cut. I received thousands of emails, tweets, and even, believe it or not, a handful of actual paper letters from listeners telling me how much they loved Cruel Crue Summer.
Alas, even though Hard, Heavy & Hair will be back next week and every week after with new shows, this is the last show of the Summer. Labor Day is in a few days, and that marks the official end to the Summer season, and also, to Cruel Crue Summer–at least for the year. We’ll see if the feature returns next year.
So here’s your last Cruel Crue Summer, starting with the Motley Crue single we all thought was the last we’d ever get–and were happy to be wrong about. Released in January 2015 as the Crue embarked on their final tour, signed in a compact of blood, this is “All Bad Things.”

I know: This is the last Cruel Crue Summer, and there’s no better way to end it than with “Home Sweet Home,” the last song the Crue ever played on stage together. That was, in fact, the live recording of the guys playing their last song ever together on stage, New Year’s Eve, 2015, in Los Angeles.
The entire concert is available as the live album The End: Live in Los Angeles, if you want to relieve that momentous and pretty damn sad moment in Rock N Roll history.

It’s time for another Cover Song of the Week clue.
The Cover Song of the Week was the first big hit for the covering band in 1989, which came from their Bob Rock-produced, self-titled debut album on Geffen Records the following year. Despite the album’s pedigree and quality, and despite opening for Kiss on tour, this band couldn’t get much play for their music videos on MTV. According to AllMusic.com, the reason was because the band doing the Cover Song of the Week this week was, quote, “Ugly. Scary even by heavy metal standards. Looking like a gang of Hell’s Angels.”
It was image the lead singer embraced in a cameo the next year in 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The singer, who later fronted the Four Horsemen band, played the biker Schwarzenegger throws through the window near the beginning of the film.
Who was the not-so-photogenic late-80s Glam band fronted by the same singer as the band that gave us this song?
If you’re still stumped, the third Cover Song of the Week clue should make things much easier.

Janne Stark is a Swedish guitarist who has placed with Locomotive Breath and Overdrive, while Neil Merryweather–whom you just heard singing and playing bass–has recorded and performed with Lita Ford, Steve Miller, Billy Joel, and Rick James.

A few weeks ago you may remember me mentioning on the air that I suffered a herniated disc during some rather acrobatic sex. If you’ve never had a bulging disc, it hurts like hell, let me tell you.

Rare hair from Melbourne, Australia Melodic Hard Rockers. That’s the song “Tokyo Rain” from White Widdow–Widdow with two Ds for some reason–from their 2010 self-titled debut album on AOR Heaven records. Since that debut album, the band has released three more LPs. Powerplay Magazine rated them 9 out of 10 and said, quote, “White Widdow is a band quietly getting on with being excellent.” End quote. High praise!

…one more song.
The first two Cover Song of the Week clues were a little tough for the average music listener. But, if you were a fan of Hard Rock and Glam in the late-80s, you probably already figured out the Cover Song of the Week and the artist doing it–the song was their first big hit in ’89. It’s a band who shares its name with the third-largest pizza chain in the United States, one that also has locations in Asia, the Middle East, Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
[Clip: Pizza, Pizza]And, if your head is full of 50s and 60s music trivia, you probably already guessed that the original recording artist is the Queen of Soul.
So now that leaves the song. What IS the Cover Song of the Week?

Debuting in 1989 but being a little too scary looking for the comfort of MTV programmers, Glam rocker Little Caeser had a hit with their cover of “Chain of Fools,” but it was short-lived. Without music video exposure, Little Caesar disappeared as suddenly as they appeared.
Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, originally recorded Don Covay’s song in 1967. Two years later, with the second ever awarded Best Female R&B Vocal Performance Grammy, she won the first of her 18 career Grammies with “Chain of Fools,” a song with a whopping cover count of more than 75 different versions!
