That was “Midnite Calls” from some good friends of mine, Last Nights Villain. LNV is a band on the rise. Two years ago this month they got together. A year later they’re doing regional gigs opening for Bobaflex, Kix, and Shaman’s Harvest. Since then their original songs–like “Midnite Calls” there and other songs you’ve heard on Hard, Heavy & Hair–are getting air play all over the world. Hell, after I first played them in March 2018 on Indie & Unsigned spotlight, half the stations that air Hard, Heavy & Hair added LNV to their rotations. So if you want to hear more from Last Nights Villain, keep it tuned to this station after the show. And if you don’t hear LNV, request them from the station!

Are you ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue?

As always, the first clue is the hardest. Unlike always, I’ll start by giving you a clue about the covering artist rather than the song or the original. The covering artist is a 21st Century Heavy Metal and Melodic Metalcore band from Wichita, Kansas in the US. It was founded by songwriter and music producer Chris Dawson, who plays guitar, ethnic flutes, electric an acoustic Irish cittern, didgeridoo, and other instruments. You may also know Chris from from his work managing and producing Saul.

Coming up is a woman savagely destroying a bass player, Two last evers from White Lion and Badlands, and Motley Crue, TNT, Reality Suite, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, and more.

Ready for another Cover Song of the Week clue?

The Cover Song of the Week original is a career-defining song Gerard McMahon (aka McMann), who would later go by the stage name G. Tom Mac, wrote for a movie–an iconic 80s film. He said he was glad he wrote the song after reading the script instead of after watching the film. He said if he’d seen the film first he might have made the Gothic Rock song about vampires.

If you still have no idea, don’t worry. The third clue should make it pretty easy to guess the song.

A three-way of hair there starting with TNT “10,000 Lovers (In One)” by request for Nicole, then “Little Indian Angel” from Enuff Z’Nuff, and finally rare hair reminding us what summer is all about. That was “In The Summer Heat” from a band that took it’s name from a Night Ranger B-side, Play Rough.

I have to tell you something funny. I want to make ABSOLUTELY CLEAR that this is not coming from my mouth, and that I have NOTHING but love and respect for bass players, rhythm guitarists, and every member of a band who plays their instruments in a studio and especially up live in front of a crowd. Keep that in mind. This is A TRUE STORY but ISN’T me saying these things.

All right.

So a friend of mine gets a text the other day from a guy who ghosted her two years ago. Basically, he texts her arrogantly saying “let’s hookup” like she’s been holding her breath for the last two years and is going to run right out and jump on his

So, my friend gets this text. And the arrogant ass just happens to be a bass player. So she responds with this–and remember, she’s saying this to knock down a peg or two this one particular bass player. She has nothing but love and respect for all musicians, too.

My friend sent me the texts. She replies to his out of nowhere, arrogant, let’s-hook-up text, she says, quote: “You’re a bassist. Maybe if you played lead guitar or drums, but…” and then trails off with an ellipsis. As you might expect, he responds with “R u serious?!”. Just to smash the arrogant asses ego all the way into the ground, she adds, “Look on the bright side: at least you’re not a rhythm guitarist. I mean, at least ugly chicks will still bang you.”

Ohhh! Daayyyyummm. That is some harsh stuff there!

Again–and I can’t emphasize this enough–this is NOT how my friend really feels. She said this because this guy was a douchebag and he just happens to play bass in a band. My friend–as do I–happens to have mad respect for bassists AND rhythm guitarists–all musicians. If you play triangle in a freakin’ band, I got nothing but love and respect for you.

So, I just wanted to share that savage destruction of one douchebag. Maybe he’ll be a little less full of himself next time he messages someone he blew off for two years.

Speaking of ghosting, up to number 8 this week on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart 8 months after its release, this is “Faith” from Ghost.

Continuing with the running thread of music about Native Americans is The Cult and Rival Sons.

Cult frontman Ian Astbury has long had a fascination with Native American culture. When he moved from England to Canada as a young boy he visited a six-nation reservation where he learned about Native American religion and culture. He said, quote, “I saw a whole lot more truth and wisdom there than in what I was being taught by my white schoolteachers.” End quote.

He wrote this song for the Cult’s seminal 1989 album Sonic Temple with those early experiences in mind.

I’m Pariah Burke. This is Hard, Heavy & Hair show number 213 which has a musical theme about Native American Indians running through some of the music. That was “American Horse” from the Cult.

This next song is “Manifest Destiny (Pt. 2)” by Rival Songs. It’s called “Part 2” because it’s the second half of a lyrically heavy story about a Native American man whose entire world is wiped out during what should have been a routine buffalo-hunting trip. In an interview with Artist Direct, Rival Sons drummer Michael Miley said of the song: “It’s a paradox because the white man kept calling the Indians, ‘Godless’ and ‘dirt worshippers.’ When really, here are these totally spiritual beings who are one with the earth and don’t leave a trace, and the white man comes in and calls them, ‘Godless.’ They’re really godless. Part 2 is about the revenge. It’s the answer to Part 1.”

Korn there with “Thoughtless” from 2002’s Untouchables LP. New record The Nothing–Korn’s 13th studio album–will drop on September 13th, which just happens to be Friday the 13th. Should be some good double-spooky listening there.

The Cover Song of the Week is right around the corner, which means its time for your last Cover Song of the Week clue.

Earlier I told you the Cover Song of the Week was originally written for an iconic 80s film and has become synonymous with the film. In fact, the subtitle to the song is “the theme from” that movie.” Maybe these sound bytes from the film will help you guess the song.

This is rare hair–or maybe I should say rare mane–because it’s White Lion. The first (and last) studio album of original material since 1991’s Mane Attraction, 2008’s Return of the Pride is a direct sequel to their double-platinum ’87 record Pride. Return of the Pride is an almost track by track continuation to songs like “Lonely Nights,” “Hungry,” and “Wait.” This deep cut calls back to both “Lady of the Valley” from Pride as well as “Cherokee” from ’85’s Fight to Survive. This is “Battle at Little Big Horn” on Hard, Heavy & Hair. The Cover Song of the Week is next.

How did you do guessing the Cover Song of the Week?

As you probably already guessed, it’s the theme from the movie The Lost Boys, though the actual title is “Cry Little Sister.” Gerard McMann wrote and performed the song after reading the Lost Boys script. He wanted the song to be about a teenager’s longing for family and belonging, not about vampires specifically. If he’d seen the movie first, he said, he might have written about vampires.

I’m glad he didn’t. “Cry Little Sister” is a timeless gothic rock song. Marilyn Manson’s version was used in the trailer for the DCEU network’s live-action superhero sidekick show Titans, which prompted Manson to release the song as a single late in 2018. That same version is also slated to be included in the Fox/Marvel X-Men Universe movie The New Mutants if that movie ever actually appears. They’ve been teasing it for, what, 3 or 4 years now?

Anyway. Manson’s version isn’t the Cover Song of the Week.

That version was actually a top 20 hit back in 2010 from Chris Dawson’s band, the Kansas-based Heavy Metal and Melodic Metalcore band Seasons After.
