“Wouldn’t You Rather” is the brand new single from Alter Bridge’s upcoming LP Walk the Sky. That record will be out October 18th. Until then, listen for at least two more singles on Hard, Heavy & Hair. Alter Bridge will be taking off on a European tour later in the year with Shinedown and Sevendust to support Walk the Sky.

So, you’ve already heard rare hair and one brand new song. What else can you expect on this week’s Hard, Heavy & Hair Show? A butt load.

You’re going to hear more new music by a band called Every Mother’s Nightmare, Veio, and a blast from the past making a comeback… Well, I’ll make it a surprise. If you’re a fan of Hair, you’re going to want to stick around for this new track by an 80s Hair band back with a vengeance.

In addition to the new songs you’ll hear hits and deep cuts from Van Hagar, Dio, Skid Row, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Tesla, Corroded, Godsmack, Motley Crue, and more.

After three weeks on the charts, this next song from English rockers Dinosaur Pile-Up is making its way upward. It’s currently at number 29 and rising. This is “Back Foot” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

Van Halen – Don’t Tell Me (What Love Can Do)

From 1995’s Balance that was a Van Halen rarity. “Don’t Tell Me (What Love Can Do)” was the second single from the record, but at the start of 1995, mainstream radio considered Hard Rock dead and Van Halen with it. Most people have never heard it.

I’ll hit you with a song you can’t help but sing-along to right after your first Cover Song of the Week clue. Remember: the first clue is always the toughest, the one to challenge the most hardcore of rock trivia enthusiast.

One half of the duo who wrote and sang the Cover Song of the Week original said he thought the song was a throwaway. It probably wasn’t even going to be released outside their native Sweden. But then an American exchange student brought the song back to Minneapolis and convinced radio station KDWB to play the song. From there, it spread to other stations on bootleg cassettes. It reached the top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100 in the US before it was even officially released as a single. When it was, in January 1989, the song skyrocketed to the top of the charts in 25 countries including the US where EMI America had previously rejected the duo as being, quote, “unsuitable for the American market.”

A deep cut off their new album Shock, that was Tesla with “California Summer Song.” Can’t you just see yourself cruisin’ the beach with the top down and that song playing? That album was produced and co-written by Def Leppard’s Phil Collen.

A lot of seminal albums are turning 30, 35, or even 40 lately. Another one hitting 35 in July is Dio’s sophomore album, The Last in Line. With Vinnia Appice on drums, Jimmy Bain playing bass, Rough Cuts keyboardist Claude Schnell, and guitarist Vivian Campbell, long since a member of Def Leppard, The Last in Line was a perfect follow-up to Dio’s first album Holy Diver. To celebrate that platinum-selling record reaching an age older than some of my listeners, let’s look back 35 years to 1984 with the title track to The Last in Line. This is Dio.

Dean Aden in Lexington, KY asked me to play some rare hair. By request, this is Swedish four-piece Dynamite who shamelessly pay tribute to Bon Scott. I’m going to fill my ice wedge whisky glass to the very top with Old Grand Dad 114 for this song. Here’s Dynamite with the title track to their 70s-influenced 2014 album Blackout Station. Hopefully I won’t blackout before the show’s over.

Rare hair Dynamite and “Blackout Station” by request for Dean in Kentucky, the birth place of my favorite kind of spirits, good, old-fashioned, American Kentucky bourbon. If you follow the show on Instagram, you saw that I posted a photo recently of the bourbon I’m drinking now, Old Grand Dad. At 114-proof, it hits you hard and has strong brown sugar and cinnamon flavors, with a spicy orange peel finish and more than a little rye heat. I don’t typically like rye, but I like it here. Old Grand Dad is distilled by Jim Beam, which, you may have heard, is the latest distillery to suffer a fire. Last Wednesday 45 thousand bourbon barrels caught fire in the Versailles, Kentucky Jim Beam warehouse.

That’s the second or third big bourbon warehouse fire in the last two years. The 1792 distillery fire last year destroyed 9,000 barrels, but then the remains are being sold at a premium. And then Buffalo Trace says its underproducing compared with unexpected demand, so they raise the price on their brands. I’m not a fan of Buffalo Trace brand itself, but they also make Weller, which I do like a helluva lot, and Buffalo Trace has jacked up the price of Weller bottles.

Call me cynical, but I wonder if the distilleries are aren’t trying to create artificial demand or creatively deal with surplus inventory.

Ponder that while you check out this brand new release from neighboring Tennesee, home of Jack Daniels. This is the latest from Every Mother’s Nightmare, “Southern Way,” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

How about another Cover Song of the Week clue?

The artist doing the Hard Rock Cover Song of the Week is a relatively new band from Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Formed in 2011, they charted with their 2012 EP Demons, which was produced by Sevendust’s drummer Morgan Rose. The Cover Song of the Week, though, came from their 2011 debut LP, the Wreckage, and is Rare Hair. For that reason, the third and final clue will be some rather obvious lyrics from the song itself.

Still coming up is Cruel Crue Summer, Nashville Pussy, Godsmack, Shotgun Messiah, Autograph, Queensryche, Skid Row, and two more brand new tracks.

Let’s stay in the South with a band from Atlanta, despite their name. It’s Nashville Pussy with a song about the one thing I love more than music and bourbon.

From the only Motley Crue album to not feature Tommy Lee on drums, that was “1st Band on the Moon.” Shortly after Vince came back to the band, Tommy quit in large part because of his resentment over Vince rejoining. For 2000’s New Tattoo LP the Crue brought in Vince’s friend, former Ozzy drummer Randy Castillo. That was Randy you heard pounding the beat on the groovy tongue-in-cheek New Tattoo deep cut.

Next week I’ll have another Crue hit and another Motley deep cut on another installment of Cruel, CRUE Summer.

Climbing steadily up Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart on its way to number 1, this is Godsmack “Under Your Scars,” currently in the number 4 spot.

Two weeks ago on Hard, Heavy & Hair number 206, the show titled “Old School Crimes,” I introduced you to Veio in the Cover Song of the Week. They did a blistering cover of Filter’s “Hey Man Nice Shot,” which I revealed on the show was NOT written about the person most people think it was. The track you just heard, “Flare of Defiance,” is the brand new single from Veio. Portland is hopping, man. Not only do you have me broadcasting from here, but we’ve also got Black N Blue, Red Fang, Dirty Rhythm, who started the show, and that new band, Veio. Not to mention amazing outdoor activities, the best strip clubs in America, and a ton of breweries.

And, just a few hours north of us is a little suburb of Portland called Seattle. This 1988 hit is by an act from that tiny Portland suburb. Here’s Queensrÿche “Eyes of a Stranger” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

Mad Margritt – It’s Time I Told You Goodbye

I really like Eddie Smith’s vocals. And Mark Cook’s guitar solo… Good stuff. That was Mad Margritt with “It’s Time I Told You Goodbye” from their 2016 Love, Hate and Deception. The first thing I ever heard from Mad Margritt was the song “In The Name of Rock,” which I’ve played before. It was on this compilation disc from Perris Records called Hollywood Hairspray, Volume 3. The compilation also contained tracks from Crazy Lixx, Gemini Five, a Helsinki outfit called Sleazy Dream, and others. Perris has put out, I think, 7 volumes of Hollywood Hairspray.

I love compilation albums like that, movie soundtracks, and such. They’re an amazing way to get exposed to new artists and tunes. That’s how I discovered Mad Margritt, and then I went back and checked out their albums.

We’re almost to the Cover Song of the Week. We’ve got time for just two more new song premieres

one more new song premiere

which I’ll give you right after your third and final Cover Song of the Week clue.

The first two verses of this Number 1 song don’t mean anything at all but are part of the reason the song became so popular and endures more than thirty years later. “Walking like a man, hitting like a hammer” the writer describes as quote “words just scribbled down to have something to sing. [We] couldn’t come up with anything better, so we kept them. Everybody gets lucky sometimes.”

Here’s that surprise new song. It’s by another Tennessee band, one that made a splash back in ’89 by starting out playing original music from the get go–not covers like a lot of their contemporaries. They got noticed first in the Memphis music scene, selling out shows, and, one night, by Warrant frontman Jani Lane. Jani helped get the music Todd Poole, Sid Fletcher, Josh Weil, and Scotty Trammel–better known as Roxy Blue–in front of LA labels. Legendary A&R man Tom Zutaut, recently in the Dirt on Netflix, signed Roxy Blue to Geffen. Paired with Guns N Roses producer Mike Clink, Roxy Blue recorded 92’s Want Some record. Unfortunately, just like other bands on this show, their debut was just a little too late to make Roxy Blue as big as they should have been.

27 years later, now on Frontiers Music, Roxy Blue is touring and recording again. Now with Jeff Caughron on lead guitar, this is the brand new single by Roxy Blue. This is “How Does It Feel” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

What song starts with the memorable but dummy lines “Walking like a man, hitting like a hammer”? It’s the same song that wouldn’t have been released outside Sweden if an American exchange student hadn’t smuggled it home from Sweden and convinced a local Minneapolis radio station to play it. From there, the station shared it to its sister stations, and then bootleg cassettes made their way to other radio stations.

The song became a runaway international hit in 1988 before the Swedish duo even officially released it. When they did, in January 1989, the catchy Pop tune topped the charts in 25 countries, including hitting number 1 and going Gold in the U.S.

What was that song? Who was that artist? It’s an enduring song, one that is still popular 30 years later. It’s so popular that it’s still being covered by artists like the Electric Six in 2015, Leo less than a year ago, and, in 2011, by a Pennsylvania Hard Rock and Alt Metal band named Candlelight Red.
