Even so, let’s get the show rolling with a salutation from the first of several bands to cross the pond during the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the lat 70s and early 80s. This is Hard, Heavy & Hair show number 202 closing out a magical and monstrous May 2019. In May, Hard, Heavy & Hair aired shows devoted to Cinco de Mayo, complete with the world’s first Heavy Metal mariachi band, Metalachi; the World Whiskey Day show with great drinking songs from the likes of Sammy Hagar, Billy Idol, Steelcity, Metallica, Dorothy, and Hellyeah, among others; and, of course, May saw Hard, Heavy & Hair hit the huge milestone of its 200th show, which was full of surprises and special segments during its special 3-hour run time.

Brand new Disturbed there. That’s the fourth, and probably last, single from their 2018 Evolution album. They just wrapped up a worldwide tour with Three Days Grace to promote the album. If you missed them, don’t worry: Disturbed also just announced a new set of North American tour dates that will carry them out through October. They’ll be joined by Pop Evil or In This Moment on most of them.

Ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue? The first one is always the hardest, so don’t be discouraged if you have no idea.

This Cover Song of the Week is going to be a little tougher to guess than the usual Cover Song of the Week mysteries. There are a few reasons for this. First, though the Cover Song of the Week itself was a hit for the band, that was back in ’87, and it wasn’t a giant hit. Most people also don’t know it’s a cover, specifically of an original song by an obscure British rock trio from 1981. And there’s the big challenge to solving the mystery–almost no one knows much about the original band. BUT, let’s give it a try, shall we?

The original recording artist was a British band formed by the late Jim Diamond and former Jeff Beck Group members Tony Hymas and Simon Phillips. The band name was formed by combining pieces of the three founding members’ surnames. They did well in the UK and Australia, but were most notable for being part of MTV’s very first broadcasting day, August 1st, 1981. Their music video for the Cover Song of the Week original was played three times that day, with its first airing being the fifth video ever played on MTV. It was played between the Who’s “You Better You Bet” and “We Don’t Talk Anymore” by Cliff Richards.

“Supernaut” with that mind-blowing riff. Way back on Hard, Heavy & Hair no. 143 that was the Cover Song of the Week original. The Industrial Death Disco cover was by Ministry side project 1,000 Homo DJs.

I’ve got a dedication here from someone calling their self “The Teacher” to Nicole in Connecticut. The Teacher writes, “My friend Nicole listens every week to your show, usually while she mows her giant lawn, so I know she’ll hear this. Indie & Unsigned is a semi-regular segment of the show wherein I get to showcase an up-and-coming unsigned artist or one with an independent label. With all the special Hard, Heavy & Hair shows in May, I haven’t had time to spin many Indie & Unsigned artists.

This week, I want to hit you with not one, two, but three Indie & Unsigned artists.

Rather than in a formalized segment like I usually do, with its own intro and outro, I’m going to work in these unsigned or Indie label artists throughout the remainder of the show. This first one is from LA. Fastride features guitars and songwriting by Ty Asoudegan, who has played, recorded, and collaborated with artists like Scott Ian, Black Star Riders, Jake E Lee–one of my favorite guitarists–Cinderella’s Tom Keifer, and Steel Panther, among others.

Still a little ways off from putting together a full album, Ty sent me this next song that will undoubtedly lead the album Fastride is working on. It’s a song that sounds like you’ve stepped back in time to the heyday of guitar-lead 80s Hard Rock and Hair.

A deep cut from the Cherry Pie album, that’s “Mr. Rainmaker” from Warrant to get you in the mood for a Cover Song of the Week clue about another 80s Hard Rock band.

The Cover Song of the Week includes an acoustic guitar. This is important because the use of acoustic guitars in several of the band’s hits, including the Cover Song of the Week, helped tilt the band toward playing an all-acoustic show, something they initially didn’t want to do. In fact, it took reverse psychology to get them to play all acoustic. Their manager, Peter Mensch, told them, quote, “You’d have to be really great musicians to pull this off, and you’re probably not good enough.” End quote. Challenged, they played the proposed club shows fully acoustic, unplugged. Recording the shows, they arranged the performances into a live album that became their biggest selling record. That record also helped inspire other Hard Rock and Metal musicians to perform acoustic versions of their songs on the weekly MTV show MTV Unplugged.

Who was that five-man 80s Hard Rock band that was the first to succeed big with an acoustical jam?

Ponder that while I hit you with with another Indie & Unsigned artist, this one a band that says it was put together with crazy glue and duct tape. From their 2018 debut album, this is “Oh Honey” by refreshingly uncomplicated rock band the Bad Somethings.

The Scorpions “Don’t Believe Her” from 1990’s Crazy World record. That was a request from Lacey, a friend of mine who says the song describes her. She’s an exotic dancer (under a different name). I’ve seen her in action, too, separating lovestruck guys from as much as $700 in an hour and a half. “Guys are stupid,” is Lacey’s mantra. hahaha Yeah, we are. Good thing, too. Stupid guys bought the new Harley Forty-Eight Special Lacey rode beside us down to Mount Shasta on the California border last weekend.

From three of my favorite subjects–Harley’s, strippers, and my friends–to another of my favorite subjects, day drinking, I’ve got a new song for your from Eve To Adam. Eve to Adam is lead by brothers Taki and Alex Sassaris from New York City, and has been around since ’97. They’ve even opened for the band doing this week’s Cover Song of the Week. This is the title track to their upcoming 6th studio album, Day Drinking. I’m going to listen with a fresh pour of Jameson.

The next track is from an up-and-coming band I’ve been corresponding with on Instagram for the last several months–and watching their live performance clips, all of which this year feature vocalist Kimmii Heart in the sexiest stage pants I’ve ever seen on a Hard Rock frontwoman. They’re difficult to describe. Fortunately Reality Suite’s music isn’t: with big vocals by Kimmii Heart that sometimes stray into the yard of Amy Lee, Reality Suite is at times a Melodic Metal group with whisps of Glam and notes of Classic Rock, while at other times they’re light and airy Hard Rock with strong melodies and fun lyrics. It’s a combination that keeps their albums interesting, approachable without getting mired down in too rigid a sound.

I only have time on this show to play one track by them, so you won’t get to hear too big a range. I’ll play more on future shows. This is Reality Suite’s latest single “Dead to Me” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

Normally I only play a single indie label or unsigned artist per show, but with May so busy with the big 200th show, the Cinco de Mayo episode, and more, I hadn’t been able to do the regular Indie & Unsigned feature.

The band doing the Cover Song of the Week is named after a Serbian-American inventor and futurist who, following his death in 1943, was largely forgotten about. The California band I’m talking about not only took their name from this then-obscure inventor, but also derived song and album titles and lyrics and other song content from the inventor and events related to him. This band namesake inventor has seen a popular culture awareness spike thanks to the band, modern inventor Elon Musk, and others recognizing and promoting the long-ago inventor’s contributions to the world.

If you know who that electrifying inventor is, you know who the band is. The Cover Song of the Week comes from their first album.

Judas Priest’s Turbo album in 1986 is one of the first uses of guitar synthesizers in Metal. Iron Maiden’s Somewhere In Time record the same year was another. Here’s a song each from those albums. Here’s Judas Priest “Turbo Lover” followed by Maiden and “Wasted Years” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

This week’s cover isn’t as well known as some Cover Songs of the Week. How do you think you did?

What British three-piece originally released the song in 1981 with a band name formed by parts of the members’ last names? That would be Ph.D, written out like the abbreviation for a doctorate but coming from the first letters of Simon Phillips, Tony Hymas, and Jim Diamond’s last names. They had a top 10 hit in the UK with “I Won’t Let You Down,” but it was the music video for their other song “Little Suzie’s on the Up” that aired three times on MTV’s first day of broadcasting on August 1st 1981. It was the fifth video played after the Buggles, Pat Benatar, Rod Stewart, and the Who.

The cover version of Ph.D’s song was the third single from the 1986 debut album of from Tesla, Mechanical Resonance. That was the same album that gave us “Modern Day Cowboy” and “Gettin’ Better,” but it was their rendition of “Little Suzi” that was the highest-charting single from the certified platinum album. It hit number 22 on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks chart while “Modern Day Cowboy” only reached the 35 spot.
