Speaking of what you expect, let’s get you your first Cover Song of the Week clue.

The Cover Song of the Week, by the original artist, reached Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, Number 1 in the UK, and the Top 10 in eleven other countries in 2010 and 2011. If you live in, or visited, any First World country, it would be almost impossible for you to not know of the song. Most people can still recite the catchy chorus. There are six versions of the song, not counting covers. One, includes a curse word said more than once. Another changes the profane word to a family-friendly alternative. A third version merely blanks out the swear word in the same way as the famous “Bull-Blank” version of Pink Floyd’s “Money.” A fourth version, released only in the U.S., is a quasi-cover featuring rapper 50 Center adding his vocals to the original version of the song and mixing into the music video for his version clips from the original’s music video. The original recording artist reprised the original not once but twice. First, as a satirical remix meant as social commentary, and then, in a sincere expression of gratitude to firefighters.

Jessica Frehley is a big fan of the show, but an even bigger fan of Steelheart. She requested “Gimme Gimme by steelheart” she said because those lyrics and miljenko’s sex hungry vocals go perfectly together. Yes, they do, Jessica. Jackyl will be playing the New York State Fair in August, closing out the Fair’s new Biker Appreciation Day. Have you heard about this? The NYS Fair has a Biker Appreciation Day where everyone on a bike with a valid motorcycle license gets in for just $1 and has free motorcycle parking. As a biker myself, I think that’s pretty cool.

Jackyl will be joined by Grand Funk Railroad, Bad Company, the Dropkick Murphys, Lindsey Stirling, and a number of other musical acts.

On last week’s Hard, Heavy & Hair Show I shared some HUGE tour news about this next band. This is “Big Gun” from AC/DC.

Def Leppard “Gods of War” from Hysteria.

Motley Crue’s the Dirt Soundtrack gave us a cover of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” that was the Cover Song of the Week on Hard, Heavy & Hair 192 the week the Dirt premiered, March 21st. That album also gave us three new Crue originals, the title track, “The Dirt (Established 1981),” “Danger,” and this next song. All three originals were written as potential title songs for the film. When the band and the label selected the song we now know as “The Dirt” to be the title, Nikki Sixx revised the choruses on the other two. Not released as a single, here’s brand new Motley Crue deep cut, “Crash and Burn” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

From Las Vegas, Nevada, that was Jesse Hasek on vocals, Matt Wantland on lead guitar, and Brian Vodinh on bass, drums, backing guitar, backing vocals, and probably tending bar. Is there anything Vodinh doesn’t do in 10 Years? Damn. That was the song “Burnout” from 10 Years’s 8th studio album, 2017’s (How to Live) As Ghosts on Mascot Records.

Megadeth bassist David Ellefson spoke to Swedish magazine Rock Sverige [Ssveria], saying why he thinks Gene Simmons is one of the greatest rock stars ever. And, no, it doesn’t have anything to do with Kiss-brand coffins.

Ellefson said, quote “I remember when I bought the KISS ‘Destroyer’ piano, vocal, acoustic guitar songbook and everything was in E-flat and I knew how to read music and I went, ‘But my bass only goes to E? How do you play this?’.

“I got very frustrated and I didn’t realize they tuned down and of course in a piano book, everything’s very little. You can’t drop tune a piano and drop tuning wasn’t even in vogue. Gene’s bass playing was just incredible.”

Gene still has it, Ellefson said. “I saw KISS a couple of weeks ago, and Gene was playing the best I’ve ever heard him play. He’s ad-libbing and riffing out and his tone’s great and here he is, he’s an older guy playing fucking better than he’s ever played and just going for it! Just riffing like how Jack Bruce or John Entwistle would be riffing in between parts of songs.” End quote.

“Firehouse” from Kiss’s self-titled 1974 album is one of the songs Ellefson noted that he tried to emulate early on. Here it is, Gene with his tuned down bass, on “Firehouse” followed by the BulletBoys. Indie & Unsigned is coming up in 7 minutes.

This is Indie & Unsigned, the part of the show where I get to shine a spotlight on an up and coming local, unsigned artist, or an artist signed with an independent label.

I’ve been wanting to play this next band for a while, but they just kept getting pushed down the Indie & Unsigned schedule. Now, I’m finally getting them on the air. I’ll tell you more about them after this first of two songs. Hopefully you hear what I hear in this band. This is “On Top of the World,” their first single from sophomore record Captivity.

Forth – On Top of the World

That was Finnish-Canadian four-piece Forth–F-0-R-T-H. Here, I’ll it in a sentence: Forth is spicing up Melodic Hard Rock with two dashes of Grunge, plenty of riffs, and a big dollop of fat harmonies. Compare that song, the first single off Captivity, with this next one, a deep cut I really like, and you can hear their varied influences, including Neil Young, Queen, Nirvana, and Megadeth.

Forth – Master and Slave

“Master and Slave” there from Forth. It’s a little ironic that I chose that song when Kink Fest is happening here in Portland, but I really like that song a lot, and I’ve been wanting to get it on the air.

Forth consists of lead singer Brian Forth, for whom the band is named, guitarist Tim Norrgrann, MIkael Soderback on bass, and drummer and percussionist Eric Von Hertzen.

“My Addiction” a 2017 cut from Jack Russell’s Great White. Before that was Van Halen. Sammy Hagar said he’d love for his new band, The Circle, which includes Michael Anthony, to open for Van Halen on tour. Sammy confessed on Howard Stern recently that he’s starting to feel his own mortality and would like to leave behind only friends.

In related news, Stryper’s Michael Sweet said, if given the chance, he could help Van Halen make their best album since 1980s’s Women and Children First.

Let’s get you your second Cover Song of the Week clue.

The artist doing the Cover Song of the Week is a Swedish Sleaze Metal band formed–and disbanded–in the current Millennium. When they formed, two members were only 18 years-old, and they got their big break within days of forming–at their first ever public performance.

Formed in January of 2005 in Falkenberg, Sweden, they were immediately offered a chance to play Crue Fest Hollywood, their four-song demo in hand. Their set at the Whisky A Go Go caught the attention of Stevie Rachelle, who is the singer for Tuff and owner of rock website Metal Sludge. Rachelle offered the band a demo deal and manager’s contract and put them into the studio with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clark producing.

A tour resulted, though difficulties occurred when the band was booked to play bars they were too young to enter. A whirlwind of publicity including appearances on TV Shows LA Ink and MTV’s Jackass 24, articles in Revolver, Spin, Metal Edge, Blender, and Hustler, and performance spots supporting bands like Rats, Gwar, and Cradle of Filth brought this young band to the attention of the world.

Just as their ascent seemed to hit critical mass, the lead singer quit. His replacement was almost immediately lured away by the chance to sing for Lynch Mob… Who promptly said, “never mind,” and rehired Oni Logan on vocals.

Ultimately, the band I’ve been talking about decided to call it a day instead of taking back the singer they’d lost for a minute. They ended on a covers album. The Cover Song of the Week was the only single released from that album, but they, like the original artist, released two versions of it–one explicit, one clean.

Here’s a trio of 21st Century songs before I share with you an announcement about the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show. We’ll start with “Evil Like You” from Red Sun Rising’s second album, Thread, then slow it down with a tender ballad from Theory of a Deadman, and then speeding it back up with Escape the Fate.

I have an announcement to make.

If you listened to last week’s show, you heard me debut the very first Triple-H Triple-Shot.

It was three songs featuring Randy Rhoads and a discussion of Randy and his career. You can hear it on PariahRocks.com and MixCloud. The Triple-Shot would have been a regular feature on every Hard, Heavy & Hair Show. I say “would have been,” because that was the first… and the last Triple-Shot.

I’d been thinking about the Triple-Shot feature for Hard, Heavy & Hair for a year, trying to find just the right name for it. If you filled out the 2019 listener survey, you know I was asking for opinions on the feature and the “Triple-Shot” name for the last 5 months.

It turns out, I wasn’t the only one with the idea. And I wasn’t the first.

Do you know Rachel Logan? Rachel is the host of a radio show called Rachel’s Rock Refuge. On the Rock Refuge she has a feature called the Triple-PLAY, and I’ll be damned if it’s not the same feature as my Triple-SHOT. And she’s been doing it for years. Great minds think alike, apparently, but Rachel Logan thought of it first by a long lead, so it’s only right that I stop doing the feature.

I honestly didn’t know about Rachel’s feature–I just came up with the same idea–but today I found out about the almost identical premise of my Triple-Shot and the Rachel’s Rock Refuge Triple-Play. So, I immediately texted Rachel Logan and told her about it. And, I told her I would be dropping the feature from Hard, Heavy & Hair.

Regardless of what my exes and their families might say about me, integrity is very, very important to me personally and professionally.

I know I’ve been teasing the Triple-Shot for months, and that I teased some of the upcoming subjects for the feature. I’m not dropping those ideas. I’m just going to find a new format to present them in. It won’t be in the form of highlighting a musician and playing three songs on which that artist performed or three songs by a band or artist from different eras of their career. Give me a little time to come up with something new, something no one else is doing.

In the meantime, if you like the Triple-Shot premise, check out Rachel’s Rock Refuge. I’ve only heard two of her Triple-Plays now, but she does an amazing job, and her voice is sexy as hell.

This week’s Hard, Heavy & Hair Triple-Shot WOULD have been about John Corabi. In lieu of a full feature on him, please enjoy two songs by the OTHER voice of Motley Crue, the only singer the band has had other than Vince Neil. This is John Corabi on vocals, first for Motley Crue, and then with his current band, the Dead Daisies.

“Rise Up” was the first single from the Dead Daisies 2018 album Burn It Down, which is their fourth studio LP following the killer Make Some Noise album in 2016.

We’re SO close to the Cover Song of the Week. How are you coming on working out the song, the covering artist, and the original recording artist? Do you need another clue? Sure you do.

The original recording artist isn’t a one-hit wonder, but most of his work is with groups. Unless you’re a big fan of Soul or HipHop music, it’s probable that all you know about him IS the Cover Song of the Week. So, rather than give you clues about the artist, here’s lyrics from the song itself to help you guess the Cover Song of the Week.

How do you think you did guessing the Cover Song of the Week, the original artist, and the covering artist?

You probably guessed from the lyrics I quoted that the song is Cee Lo Green’s 2010 smash hit “Fuck You,” also called “Forget You,” in its radio-friendly version. Cee Lo produced a version called “Thank You” in 2011 to express his gratitude for firefighters everywhere. Prior to that, he performed a remix called “Fuck You (Fox News)” to parody the lies, deliberate exaggerations, and Fake News that news network had recently been caught peddling.

The covering artist, the young Swedish Sleaze Metal band that was poised to become huge right before disbanding is Vains of Jenna. To complete their contract they produced an album of covers. Their cover of Cee Lo Green’s “Fuck You,” which you’re about to hear, was the one and only single the album produced, though, like the original, they released two versions–“Fuck You” and the radio-friendly “Forget You.”

Followed immediately by the original by the man himself, this is Vains of Jenna covering Cee Lo Green’s gold-digger callout anthem, “Fuck You” on Hard, Heavy & Hair.

Babylon AD, “Bang Go the Bells.” A lot of people deride Babylon AD, but in 1989, a year with stiff competition from album releases by the likes of Motley Crue, Skid Row, Great White, Tesla, Faith No More, and a ton of Pop records, Babylon AD’s debut album reached number 88 on the Billboard 200, fueled in large part by that single. I lost my CD of that album for quite a few years and was thrilled when a friend at Arista Records was able to find me a copy.
