Interview: Lisa Perry aka Hellz of Hellz Abyss
Lisa Perry is Hellz, the lead singer for Hellz Abyss, whose songs she wrote or co-wrote with new partner Daryl “Abyss” Holden, leading to a tighter, more expansive sound over the already excellent 2019 and 2020 Hellz singles such as “Control of the Unholy,” “Sinner,” and “Bitch Ran Away,” all tracks you’ve heard on the Hard, Heavy & Hair weekly radio show around the world.
On the day debut album N1FG was released, I sat down via Zoom with Lisa from her Sydney, Australia home. We talked about the strong 90s Industrial Metal influence on N1FG, the genesis of many of the tracks–including a BDSM track that any Lords of Acid fan would love to be tied up in–about the heady company she’ll be in on her upcoming International Women of Rock tour, her work with Megadeth’s Jeff Young, her endorsement for RØDE Microphones, her desire to sing lead for Motley Crue and AC/DC, and the next Hellz Abyss album, already in the works, with even more city-flattening drums and bass heft, banshee scream Metal rippers, and nitro-fueled guitar assaults that couldn’t fit on N1FG.

Ready for your first Cover Song of the Week clue? Remember: the first clue is always the hardest.
Let’s talk about the Cover Song of the Week original.
The year is 1982. MTV is playing in heavy rotation a British New Wave SynthPop band’s music video. The video is shot primarily on a set covered with aluminum foil and mirrors–with camera and lights visible in the reflections. The strange lyrics spark the imagination with imagery of a bewitching woman and a beams of light from the sky snatching her away. Amidst all these memorable details is the most striking thing: the lead singer’s hairdo, so distinctive, that twelve years later, it was mentioned in Pulp Fiction, and has made the band’s name a permanent part of Pop Culture.
Who was that band? What was that 1982 Top 10 Hit? That’s the Cover Song of the Week original.

The Cover Song of the Week original was the theme song for Grand Theft Auto: Vice city.

I’m kind of excited about that band you just heard. They were make-up and play 70s- and 80s-style Hard Rock, going back to the theatrics that make Metal and Hard Rock more than music. All four members wear white grease paint with different colored star-shaped face adornments. They kind of look like Paul Stanley’s bastard children. I mean that with the utmost respect. I’m not ragging on them.
From Sweden, that was the band Starmen with their new single “By the Grace of Rock N’ Roll.”
Here’s another group that understood the power of theatrics. This is Twisted Sister and “The Price.”

Six months shy of 30 years old, this is Guns N’ Roses cover of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” I gotta say, this cover may be better than the original–and I like Dylan. What do you think? Back in 1982, the British New Wave band had a Synth Pop hit thanks in large part to MTV playing their music video of a set bedecked by mirrors and aluminum-foil (or alumni-ee-um for my British, Australian, and Canadian listeners). Mike Score’s hairstyle became even more legendary than the band’s music. It was universally recognized, and even, as you heard a moment ago, referenced in the 1992 film Pulp Fiction from Quentin Tarantino.
“I Ran (So Far Away)” was just one of several hits for A Flock of Seagulls. Giving it the Hard Rock treatment in a brand new release is Orlando, Florida-based band Kings County, which comprises vocalist and bassist Rob Dexter, lead guitar player Steve Bell, Joe Lopez on drums, and second guitarist Bill Kania, all former performers at Walt Disney World in neighboring Kissimmee.
This is “I Ran,” the Hard, Heavy & Hair Cover Song of the Week, by Kings County, followed immediately by the A Flock of Seagulls original for comparison.

“I Ran (So Far Away),” an 80s Pop classic, is the Hard, Heavy & Hair Cover Song of the Week. That was the original by A Flock of Seagulls following the brand new Hard Rock cover by Kings Country.
Kings County’s music video for their cover of “I Ran” pays homage to the original and is arguably even trippier than the original Flock of Seagulls mirror- and aluminum foil-embossed version.
